gaku as a rental boyfriend
pairing: gaku maruko x gn!reader
tags: customer!reader x rental boyfriend!gaku, mutual crushes
gaku had to do all sorts of odd jobs in his past to earn money. being a rental boyfriend was just one of those jobs, but one he liked far more than any shady ones he had to do…
usually people just came to him to make their exes jealous. he'd be booked for a day to pick them up, act all coupley with them around their former partner and then never got to see them again
but when gaku met you, he was surprised you weren't interested in that. in fact, you had no ex to begin with, nor a crush on anyone!
and yet, you had asked for his services, to learn about relationships and get more experience, so that people at your school wouldn't tease you about it
gaku had very little experience with dating himself. all dates he ever went on were ones he was rented for. no girl or guy actually wanted a genuine date with him…
gaku actually opened up to you about that. he advised you to find another rental boyfriend with more experience, but was shocked when you told him you wanted to stay with him
even if your time together was paid for, the two of you began to form a genuine connection with each other! you got to bond over your inexperience and make some actual memories with each other
and soon, gaku kept thinking about you, even while he was on dates with other people. and you had that weird sting in your chest every time you thought about him going out with someone that wasn't you…
Me: I will not get needlessly mad at westerners, I will not get needlessly mad at westerners...
Someone who clearly wasn't raised in the Asian continent: OMG why is this list of top anime have two unknown children's anime like Chibi Maruko-chan in it, instead of popular shounen series x--
This show is iconic, funny (especially the 90's series with wry, cynical commentary from the narrator), Maruko is hilarious, and unlike so much slice-of-life anime that is too idealized to be relatable, it's based on the author's Showa era childhood.
It's relatable to three or more generations at once: the kids who relate to Maruko's common childhood problems, the parents who remember watching 90's Maruko-chan, and grandparents who lived in the Showa era as the real Momoko (Maruko's given name is Sakura Momoko, like the author) did and recognize the lifestyles and pop culture!!!
Some things are more relatable to Japanese people--the domestic market--and that's okay. Please remember who most anime is made for in the first place! Sazae-san didn't ever seem to get an Arabic dub, but Maruko-chan did. Maruko-chan was aired in a lot of Asian countries, even in the Indian subcontinent!
We still had some late 80's stuff in the 90's here in Saudi Arabia, I had one of these Flomo pencil cases second-hand. I recognized this style immediately! It's relatable and nostalgic for people of a certain part of the world and certain eras. Some things aren't made for you...
It's fine if you don't see it or get it, but if you give Maruko-chan a chance, the heartwarming and funny, universal experiences of childhood might ring true to you too... because Maruko isn't an idealized, perfect, always kind, always polite, always put together kid...
She's a lazy, mischievous, sometimes grumpy, but kind at heart kid who loves lazing about, getting more pocket money, and eating sweets.
She also loves to draw and once won a drawing contest with a drawing inspired by a trip to the dentist, but because of the paper shortage after the war, she never got her certificate for winning the competition.
It's a little subtly tragic that way, sometimes, because she's growing up in the post-war era, but most of the time, it's light-hearted, playful, lazy, carefree, but also given to some poignant moments...
Even the modern series, which is largely original content with an expanded cast with some remakes of older stories, has its appeal and poignant moments (you can watch episode 822 dubbed in English--the modern English dub is leagues ahead of the way it was back in the day--keep in mind, not native English speakers--the episode about butler Hideji's past, as he was a soldier during the war, and lost his wife), My Favourite Song is also a very sentimental and sweet movie... but mostly, the show is about funny, everyday struggles and just being a kid.
old Marmony/Maruko drawing 🥺 love them sm
