Penelope and Colin get the best kind of first kiss on Bridgerton so far because there’s something about the whole, it doesn’t have to mean anything, concept. It’s what makes fake dating a riveting trope, but with societal rules, it’s done in different ways during the show. Anthony essentially catches Daphne and Simon, and in Season 2, the first kiss follows all the angst from “The Choice.” But...for Colin and Penelope, it’s a moment of revelation, and it’s theirs entirely. No one interrupts them. Nothing interferes with the kiss, not even their own hesitations, because what begins as a plea ends in something real. 

[I]t’s such a beautiful moment[.] The way it’s shot, the music, the performances—everything works to create a scene that feels as magical as historical romances are supposed to be.

“All these rules are to keep the marriage mart churning. But once you have performed your function and found your match, you are free.” It’s an intriguing perspective that, one assumes, much of the ton shares. It also casts a new light on Colin and Penelope’s interactions thus far. From day one, they’ve always been a little (or a lot) closer than society allows. They think nothing of being unchaperoned alone, talking about highly personal things, or even physically touching. There’s a casual intimacy there, and it only becomes a “problem” when the ton begins scrutinizing them more closely. Symbolically, they are already on the level of an old married couple, with the freedom and intimacy it allows.

There’s no denying the fact that both Eliza and Inspector Blake are fond of each other. In...Season 5, Episode 6, “Dangerous Liaisons,” the show proves this by delivering a class romantic comedy moment involving a closed door and the age-old will they won’t they question lingering in the air. [...]

[W]hen Eliza goes over to Inspector Blake’s house to deliver some wedding cake because his daughter is sick, she makes it unmistakable to both the audience and Blake that she cares. She’s thinking of him, and she’s thinking of Sophia. The awkward and tender tension Kate Phillips and Tom Durant-Pritchard play on stretches the beat between the characters to exhibit a bit more of that interest and, ultimately, what they’re going to do about it. Inspector Blake is the one who chooses the open door again, while Eliza decides not to leave quite yet when it’s shut.

It’s the way her breath catches right as he opens the door, and it’s the giddy excitement in her voice that tells us she’s maybe ready for a relationship because the expectations aren’t what they used to be. There’s an ease in the air, around him perhaps, that makes it more effortless to share the space without any expectations.

This is not the first time we’ve seen Patrick Nash and Eliza work together, but this is the first time personal stakes have been introduced. Of the two, Patrick has always seemed fond of Eliza and has expressed admiration for her skills, while she has not been so open. It’s great to see her place the same faith in him when he’s accused of murder[.]

It is also nice to see Eliza open up to Nash and tell him how much his faith in her means. But it is also more than that—Nash has been there at her side during investigations, he knows what she is capable of, gave her the job at Nash & Sons, and when things didn’t turn out how he expected, he chose to stay with her and show her the ropes rather than fire her. He’s not all words—he doesn’t just compliment her skills, but he also consistently demonstrates this belief through his actions.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before

And all the feelings I can’t seem to hold back.

Dear Readers,

How’s it going? Did you wake up today thinking of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, too? Same. I don’t know where I’m going with this article, I don’t have an outline like I normally do, no notes, nothing — just an almost annoyingly overpowering desire to write something. I mean is that not who I am? Your friendly neighborhood geek, the Goose often needing to just ramble about why she loves the thing she loves so much? And yes, most of us here have reached day six of crushing on Peter Kavinsky, and swooning about it all over social media, but there’s so much more. At its core, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is a story about gut wrenching vulnerability and absolute sincerity. It’s the kind of story I wish I was exposed to as a teenager in high school because in truth, it’s the first in a number of ways. Now here’s the thing, by no means am I trying to put down any of the rom-coms that came before this treasure — I live and breathe a John Hughes appreciation life, 13 Going on 30 is still the gift that keeps on giving and I will never stop loving A Cinderella Story. Plus, don’t get me started on The Princess Diaries. As a rom-com that features an Asian American lead, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before set bars impeccably high. (Seriously, though, my Asian American friends can finally see themselves in a lead as gorgeous as this, and I can’t seem to stop beaming over how amazing it is because a lot of them aren’t movie fanatics thereby, the excitement says it all. So yes, hello, here’s proof of how powerful diversity is! Yes. A thousand times yes!)

In all honesty, this article is literally just a rambling mess of feelings because there are just too many good things to say about this movie, but I don’t even know where to begin.
