Hungry? Come Nosh on a Hot Meal of Dignity and Love with Masbia!

How beautiful a world we live in when a soup kitchen is not merely a soup kitchen - it is an environment created to serve those in need a hot meal and, most importantly, dignity. As Alex Rapaport, co-founder and Executive Director at Masbia, puts it, everything his organization does it out of nothing but pure love for humanity.

When volunteering last Sunday with Base Hillel, an incredible non-profit founded and led by Rabbi Jon and Faith Leener that all millennials should check out, I had an incredible and unforgettable conversation with two of their frequent patrons, a son and mother duo. The son expressed how while his family is financially stable enough to keep food consistently on the table, they are not able to regularly go out to eat at a restaurant because of the expense. He told me with the structure of Masbia being free, restaurant-style meals with a host, waiter/waitress, and great service by their volunteers, he is able to treat his mother by taking her to a meal out and having someone serve her, rather than her making her own meals all the time. The mother did not speak English, but he translated to her what he told me and she burst into smile and nodded in agreement.

For him and his mother, it is not about the food that is the key to Masbia - even with it being delicious (thanks to Head Chef Ruben Diaz!) - it is about the restorative dignity that is being served. With so many hard workers living New York, we all deserve some sort of catering to ourselves. The staff of Masbia does such a beautiful job filling this need for all New Yorkers and for that I would like to say thank you!
