He knows the Commander could very well protect himself. He knows that, but somehow, he still feels compelled to put himself before the young man to protect him. Eoforwine isn’t one to underestimate the Commander’s abilities, but it’s sort of hard to put the idea out of his head that he’s really just… a kid. It’s a weird sort of mental dilemma, to put up with that. He knows he’s got to be double his superior’s age at least, but somehow, he’s to expect the young man to be just as capable and responsible as anyone else in the army.
And there’s no better way to put it than that, because there’s the implication that he’s not supposed to think about any of that to begin with. He still does, though. Even in a situation like this, where the Commander easily could have handled everything himself, For can’t stop thinking about that. It was all done on instinct– he can’t be sorry for that. And, really, he’s hardly scratched– at least by his standards– and sure, maybe the Commander could have handled it more smoothly than him, but it’s too late to change things now.
Eoforwine shoots the Commander a lopsided grin and replies with a chipper tone, “Aw, it’s nothin’ but a scratch, Commander. Hey, you’ve seen my ugly-ass face, so you know I’ve seen worse. Don’t worry about me. You should worry about you. You could have gotten real hurt, you know. Now, I know you can handle yourself, but you’re more important than I am. I’m just doin’ what I’m told, and that’s protecting the Commander. That’s all.”
