lil reminder that prentice was beacon of the golden towers before he was arrested. both he and wylie probably thought that they'd see each other in the towers when he was a level seven. and wylie probably thought he'd see tiergan around the base levels as a mentor too, since he was still teaching there before he resigned in protest of prentice's arrest. and prentice and leto were probably work buddies alongside being in a rebellion together, since leto was beacon of the silver tower presumably before and after prentice's arrest.

just. y'know. bits of prentice's life before, and how that must've impacted his loved ones all the more long-term.

polyglots?? in book one it seemed like sophie spoke and translated french without realizing it was even a different language but in exile when she met leto it took her a second to process that he spoke in dwarven so like uhh

realistically that mention of sophie having to realize leto was speaking in dwarven was so that the readers would be informed. but also, this makes sense because it doesn’t say that sophie struggled to reply or couldn’t understand what leto was saying - she just realized “oh, this is a different language i am hearing and understanding”.

as for the paris incident, sophie’s polyglot abilities allow her to effortlessly shift upon hearing or viewing another language. it’s kind of like her brain presses a “download” button for an entire language upon that cue. now, our brains work even while we’re asleep, so sophie’s brain didn’t make the shift quite then and there when sophie first encountered a parisian. it most likely subconsciously made the shift while sophie was unconscious in the alley, upon overhearing the cities’ bustle. so, this would make sense come where sophie replies to the parisian without recognizing, “ah, new language”. this is also paired with the fact that dex and sophie believed they were still in the lost cities (up until after that encounter), so sophie assumed the “switch” in language was her now-normal shift from english to the enlightened language.
