or The Night of Katerina Smith's Abduction
It was quiet. She walked, hands in her pockets, shoelaces swinging, steps quick and irregular, through the fading light of the evening. Her head bobbed in time to the music that poured into her ears through the headphones her parents had bought for her birthday, the most expensive pair she owned, with bluetooth and extra bass, her lips mouthing the lyrics. To an outside observer who couldn’t hear the song, she looked rather like an actor in a silent film.
Every so often, a car would whizz by. She knew not by the sound it made, for she could only barely hear it through her headphones, but by the sudden appearance of her shadow in front of her, cast by the approaching headlights.
She gazed down at her feet, taking long strides over the pavement, which was already dry despite the ten hours of rain the day before. She was wearing her favorite pair of shoes - white trainers with baby pink stripes on the side - which she had bought before that style was fashionable and before she even cared that it wasn’t. If she ever bothered to think back to the time when she didn’t care about trends, she’d have been shocked to realize how long ago it was, but she never did think about that period of her life.
As she looked at those shoes, she didn’t think about how long she’d had them. She didn’t think about all the memories those shoes held - all the places she’d worn them and people she saw there - or the way they had stretched around her foot so they fit her perfectly. Instead, she thought about the scuff marks she could see on the sides, and decided she’d have to ask her parents for a new pair.
Looking up from her shoes, Katerina Smith became suddenly aware that her shadow was static. She glanced over her shoulder, where a car idled. It was black and big and menacing, and all thoughts of shoes and headphones left Katerina’s head. She wasn’t scared, though she knew she should have been. Instead, she merely stared at the car blankly as its doors opened toward her.
And then, Katerina Smith, one set of bluetooth headphones, and a pair of pink and white trainers, were gone.
