Two book deaths I will never recover from are:
1. Beth's death in Little Women.
2. Matthew Cuthbert's death in Anne of Green Gables.

For that Shirley girl
Hey Anne. I tried to put this in an ask, but it was simply too long. And I didn't want it to get lost in the sea of RTs your post got. So.
I've mentioned on twitter before that I lost my dad a few days after you lost Matthew, so I'm in a similar cycle of grief and happiness and guilt for feeling happy and anger because how COULD he just leave us like that and guilt again because I know he didn't choose to have a heart attack and leave us behind (yeah, my dad had a heart attack as well. The tragic irony of that is unbelievable).
But I have such great friends around me, and my faith to remind me that I have the chance to see him again. But it's not just that helping. It's knowing that he wouldn't WANT me to be guilty for smiling. That he loved when I laugh. So I laugh. I enjoy life. For him, because he loved to know that his kids were laughing and smiling and enjoying themselves. I do it because it would hurt him so much to know that his death destroyed us, took away our joy.
My father was my guide: a kind, gentle and wise man with a laugh as big as the sky and a smile as wide as the mountain range beneath it. He was happy, happier still when he knew we were happy. I may not have known Matthew more than what your videos showed, but he seemed like such a kind and gentle soul. Such a soul, like my own father, wouldn't want you to be upset that you can be happy after he's gone; wouldn't want you to feel guilty for finding joy with other moments. Other people. He would want that for you. And I know he would, because for all intents and purposes he was your dad- if only for a year.
And our fathers want their daughters to be happy.
