Happy 85th Birthday to Los Angeles Dodgers legend Maury Wills who was born on today's date October 2, 1932. Wills debuted for the Dodgers in 1959 and immediately was an impact player. Wills stole 50 bases during his rookie season and would break Ty Cobb's single season record by stealing 104 bases during his NL MVP season of 1962. R.I.P. to one of my all-time favorite Dodgers, Maury Wills. I had the honor of sitting next to him at a California Angels ballgame in 1999. That was a memorable game. I was in Southern California for my grandpa’s funeral. My older cousin and I decided at the last minute to take in an Angels game the day before. While pre-gaming in the parking lot, we gave some beers to a couple in a minivan who claimed their son was a pitcher for the Blue Jays. Turns out their son was David Wells. Then, during BP, my cousin and I both got foul balls. Finally, once we were in our seats, a few distinguished looking older men sat down next to us. The man at my right side was none other than Mr. Wills. I immediately recognized him, but allowed him his anonymity. We chatted about baseball for the next few innings.
