Manifesting mentor/big brother Hal for MAWGL
Holy fuck am I the only one that didn’t know that A) my adventures with green lantern would be about JESSICA CRUZ rather than Hal or John or Kyle (he is a love interest tho) and B) she’s gonna be in MAWS????? this is gonna be so cool!!!!
kyle better not be jessica’s fucking love interest. i’m going to be so fucking pissed if that news is legit. if they felt the need to give her a love interest i don’t understand why it couldn’t be simon. the constant simon erasure is so frustrating. dc only seems to give a fuck about simon when it comes to parading him during holidays like ramadan 🤬 it’s islamaphobic af
If you have the creative control of how My Adventure With Green Lantern would go, what would you write?
If the My Adventures With Green Lantern creative team wanted a story about a kid from Coast City becoming a Green Lantern so bad, they could easily knock it out of the park by adapting Minh Le's Green Lantern: Legacy. It wouldn't even change much if they aged Tai Pham up to high school.
(But based on how MAWS was, it's clear that they care more about aesthetics and vibes than actually writing good stories that honor the characters. I'm fully convinced their entire thought process for MAWGL was "let's put the girl Green Lantern in a Sailor Moon outfit!")
Anyway, I'd actually keep Jessica as the main character, and also the high school setting. Mostly for plot reasons, but also to flex on the MAWGL writers.
The story begins with Jessica Cruz starting her first day at Martin Nodell High. Her family just moved to Michigan, so she doesn't know anyone at her new school. It's also the second semester, so everyone's already established their own friend groups and cliques. Jessica's anxiety makes it even harder for her to make any connections, so she's quickly become a loner who eats lunch behind a tree by the library.
After a couple of weeks, Jessica has taken to skipping school entirely, the consequence of which is Saturday detention. When she arrives, there's one other student, Simon Baz. He's a linebacker on the football team and one of the popular kids, though he's one of the nicer ones of that clique. Unfortunately, the supervising staff member is the loud and obnoxious Coach Gardner who always yells at Jessica to run faster in PE.
However, the coach is unusually quiet and seems to be distracted. At one point, he tells Simon and Jessica to stay put and leaves the classroom. Simon immediately gets up and begins to sneak out of detention. Jessica has a mild freakout, worrying that she'll get in more trouble for not stopping him, but their argument is interrupted when they witness Coach Gardner get punted across the football field by a big red alien.
Guy is able to hold his own until he realizes Simon and Jessica are there. Bolphunga takes advantage of the distraction and knocks Guy out, but gets tackled by Simon before he can deal the killing blow. Simon is a big guy, but Bolphunga is even bigger and easily tosses him around.
Jessica is trying to get Guy to wake up, but he's out cold. When she sees Simon get yeeted into the bleachers, she takes Guy's ring (having noticed him use it to create constructs earlier) and puts it on. Bolphunga laughs at her, but then Jessica knocks him out with a massive energy blast from the ring.
Simon's a little bruised but otherwise unhurt. Guy wakes up and takes his ring back from Jessica, using it to repair the damage to the school. He then explains that he's a semi-retired member of an intergalactic peacekeeping force and that Bolphunga had been following a power ring that was seeking out a new wielder.
Said power ring then floats down from the sky and stops in front of Jessica, announcing that she has the ability to overcome great fear and that she's being recruited into the Green Lantern Corps.
Aaand that's the first episode! I haven't really thought about what the overarching plot of an entire series would be, most of my ideas are about the characters:
Jessica's backstory is a little different, her friends were killed in a car crash rather than being murdered. Consequently, automobiles especially trigger her anxiety, which causes some tension between her and Simon when he starts getting into street racing.
Simon becomes Jessica's first friend at school and encourages her whenever she doubts herself. He goes through his own character arc of suffering a season-ending injury, quitting the football entirely bc his teammates turn out to be racist assholes who only care about his athletic ability, briefly getting into street racing, then discovering a passion for mechanical engineering. No ring for him until season 2 tho
Guy acts as mentor to both Jessica and Simon throughout the series, teaching not just how to be a Green Lantern but also offering advice on regular life struggles as well. He's very much crass and rough around the edges, but he cares deeply for his students.
While Jessica is learning to become a Green Lantern, Guy must relearn how not to be one. The reason he's "semi-retired" is because he has brain damage and using the ring only makes it worse, but he's been fighting for so long that it's hard for him to stop.
Lots of secret identity shenanigans, like Jessica having to constantly duck out of class to do Green Lantern stuff like giving directions to lost aliens or rescuing Space Cabbie after he ran out of fuel. She learns very quickly that fighting bad guys is only a small part of being a GL, and her confidence grows as she succeeds at helping people in spite of her fears.
The Corps is alive and well, but most of them are busy with their own sectors so there's only a few cameos like B'dg pretending to be Guy's pet squirrel for a bit. Hal, John, and Kyle get name dropped to indicate that ET already happened but otherwise are absent.
Mental health issues are a core theme of the story. Jessica and her anxiety are front and center of course, but Simon struggles with depression after he quits football and loses a major part of his identity. Guy has anger issues, but he's learned to manage them and only regresses occasionally.
Okay, 'My adventures with Superman', now that it's confirmed you're going to be having an extended universe, your job is to not get canceled until we get several heroes set up in your world and we can have a 'My adventures with the Justice League' cartoon.
Instead of being excited about my favs being adapted I’m just dreading how it’s going to clog the tags and fuck up the comics
Hey Fanterns if Razer and Aya appear in My Adventures with Green Lantern THAT will be our Chicken Jockey moment.
