i am once again thinking about my poly maxgriff/maxjess college au in which griff doesn't join the army and instead studies really hard to get a full ride to a state school, and after the whole baseball coach incident, takes his baby brother with him to get him away from their dirtbag father. he gets custody as ash's legal guardian and splits rent on an apartment with max, goes to school, and gets a part time job as a tutor on the side.

baby ash is seven, traumatized, and scared of max for a while, but eventually he starts trusting him. max cries the first time ash asks him to read him his bedtime story, and instead of being sad and tiny and afraid, criticizes his character voices as being "not as good as griff's".

maxgriff have Feelings for each other, but agree not to act on them while ash is still so vulnerable, bc griff is afraid that if they have conflict or break up, it'll be hard on ash to have another big life change so soon. so they agree to shelve it and maybe come back to it later.

then max meets jessica, and like the useless bisexual he is, goes "oh god, she could kick my ass. that's hot." griff assures him he supports them together and he won't be upset if max wants to be with her, and so maxjess get together. griff quietly pines, but keeps it to himself.

a few years pass. max and griff graduate. griff gets a stable job, maxjess move in together and get engaged, ash goes to high school. he makes some new friends (shorter, alex, eiji) and absolutely ADORES max and jessica's toddler son. griff writes some sad poetry about the bittersweet joy of seeing an unrequited love happy and thriving. it's cool he's fine its fine don't worry about it. ash quietly blames himself for griff's loneliness--it's hard to have much of a social life in college if you're supporting a kid, and it's hard to meet people and make more friends in the office than it would've been in school. and even though griff never told him, he Knows about his feelings for max.

the twist: so does jessica. max has been open with her from day one about having lingering feelings for griff, and she's fine with him being poly so long as he communicates with her. and she likes griff. they both team up and roast max together on family board game nights. she's been telling max to make a move for years. or at least to talk to griff now that ash is doing better max keeps waffling about it.

so jessica decides, okay, she's taking matters into her own hands. she goes and talks to ash and asks him, would you be okay with it? if max and griff were together? and ash is like hey what the fuck he's YOUR husband?? and they have a whole little talk, and they come out of it as co-conspirators.

max and griff have no idea what's coming for them. better get prepared, punks.
