LIFERS GROUP “Living Proof” dropped 28 years ago. This group was made up of all men serving serving life sentences. Prior to this in the 70s they started the "Scared Straight" program. The group was started by Maxwell Melvins. “The group wanted to demythologize the romanticism of prison”(that was a quote from the LA times) This was probably one of the most important shoots I had the honor of capturing. Die Jim Crow is transitioning into the first U.S. record label dedicated to recording formerly and currently incarcerated musicians, and we need your help. In celebration of our $50K Kickstarter campaign launch that day, we're hosting an epic evening of live music, artwork from prisons, and delicious Jamaican food. We start at 7P, with music performances sharp at 8P. Featuring Philly-based rap artists: BL Shirelle, Shotta Montgomery, Freedom Writer Plus: Baltimore R&B crooner Michael Austin Live performers from Allendale Correctional Institution (South Carolina) phoning in. Hosted by Maxwell Melvins of Lifers Group. To add to the festivities, in conjunction with Bushwick Open Studios that weekend, we'll be showcasing art for sale by incarcerated artists from across the country. Collaborating with DJC on the curation tip is Escaping Time. Guests can indulge in delicious plates of Jamaican food from Rusty and Pauline’s pop-up Jamaican Fyre! Beer is on the house. Maxwell Melvin’s Of The Lifers Group Die Jim Crow project, Wednesday June 12, 2019 on the New Abolitionists Radio we will have special guest Co-Founder/CEO, Mr. Five Mualimm-ak {Incarcerated Nation Corp.} We will discuss issues related to prison slavery and felony disenfranchisement in the United States. Five Mualimm-ak is a 2016 Columbia Unversity Justice in Education scholar. Born in Ethiopia five served 12 years incarcerated several years in solitary confinement, since his return to society Five has worked against state sanctioned torture. He is a member of OPCAT the U.N Optical Protocol on Torture and is a member of the Anti- Torture Initiative both founded at the United Nations. He is a Human Rights Defender with the ACLU & a Human Rights Ambassador for T’ruah a rabbinical call for Justice with Human Rights Watch. Five has co-founder many projects & organizations that serve those directly impacted by incarceration. After running several years of founding youth development programs five now trains Young Credible Messengers at The New Schools Institute for Transformative Mentoring (ITM), Center for New York City Affairs and is the Director of Youth And family Development at Exodus Transitional Community Services,  Fives work to end solitary confinement has reached national impact, In January 2016  the 44th president Barack Obama answered his petition with fusion media bring an end to children in solitary confinement within the federal system. Currently Five Mualimm-ak still works to produce films, TV segments, & educational events that reveal the conditions of confinement & the collateral consequences of mass incarceration for millions of people.
