Today marks the 53rd anniversary of the shootings at Kent State University.Β On May 4th, 1970, the Ohio National Guard randomly fired into a group of students protesting the Nixon Administrationβs bombing of Cambodia (which was technically a neutral country in the Vietnam War).Β Thirteen students were struck by bullets and four were killed.Β Β
Of the four killed, two were not even participating in the protest.Β The guard simply became frustrated and fired on unarmed college students.Β People have claimed all sorts of things about the demonstration to justify the shootings but the reality is there is no evidence to support any of the claims.Β They just turned, in unison, and fired into a crowd.Β Β
