I don’t think comfrey caused ludmillas death directly but I think she made a choice to save marya instead of her. And besides the arguments of how she should have saved the youngest person there, or how she knows marya would have wanted her to save ludmilla instead, or how that choice destroyed marya. I think she didn’t for selfish reasons. Partly it must have been because she loved and knew marya, that mayra was the zephyrs kid. But I think the main reason she would have chosen marya over ludmilla is that marya was more useful to her. Marya is one of the only people who she could trust to understand her equations and follow her to zood. She needed that assurance. I think she chose to let ludmilla die despite every reason she should have been the one saved because Marya was a more useful asset for her
