he walked her out the church's doors. he walked her to her car. he walked her out of his life. finn couldn't say he expected to see violet that sunday, even if she said she would come. she took their 'breakup' in stride, but there was a hurt there. he could see it, or maybe he was just projecting. maybe, like when he broke it off, he wanted her to be sad because he wasn't allowed to be. she would feel the hurt for the both of them, and he'd shove his deep down inside, like he did with all of his feelings.
he didn't expect to see her the following sunday. the wound was too fresh, and while he would've been glad to see her in the pews, he had to be a bit relieved, too. finn felt guilt over both parts and prayed on it heavily. god didn't seem to be listening, though. after three sundays, he had to concede that violet was gone from his life. he hoped she at least found another aa meeting to attend, if nothing else.
finally, he saw her. he wasn't sure, for the first few seconds, that it was really violet. like after every other aa meeting hosted in the basement of st. joseph's, finn was the first one to arrive to the meeting and the last to leave. locking up, he was bounding down the steps of the church when he noticed a car in the parking lot. briefly, he had been nervous—dark parking lot, man of the cloth; it had an episode of dateline written all over it. then he recognized the car. finn debated approaching for a whole minute. in the end, he walked over and softly rapped on the window with his knuckles, "hi, violet. good evening." he spoke quietly and smiled cautiously, like she was a cornered animal. "the meeting ended half an hour ago." as if he thought she didn't already know that. it was how they met, after all. "how are you doing?"
