what do i think marta cabrera from knives out did with the money? hint: i do NOT think she given it back to the thrombeys. at most she wouldve given some to meg to help with her education bc of their bond and it going to a good cause. and maybe harlan's mother she seemed fine. but i just unequivocally disagree with the concept that she wouldve given it back to the thrombeys even if they got jobs or whatever. like it just goes against the whole movie to me.
like okay its harlan's family? but harlan's DYING CHOICE was to cut them off and there is no reason to disrespect that wish esp after everything they put marta through. like not to be rude but i saw that take a few times and it genuinely just annoyed me and i had to get this off my chest. i felt like i was walking into an alternative universe like what are you talking about??? did u watch a different movie? genuinely? the thrombeys are a fun, spoiled family on screen but they are also incredibly cruel to marta in particular so like... i just dont see how they could be a fun silly goofy family? and i think its very weird to try to force marta into that role of provider after all theyve done to her.
its also like... the thrombeys would be fine. theyre grown adults (mostly) who have hoarded enough material possessions to sell off and make a good life for themselves if they choose to. there is no reason for marta to mother them and become another harlan to them. they can figure out themselves.
and also frankly, i just think the thrombeys are so low on marta's list of priorities to who should get the money frankly i do not even think she would even consider it (despite their incessant begging). like her mother is undocumented it is so obvious to me that getting that citizenship and the safety that comes with it comes first, esp after the threats of deportation made BY the thrombey family.
anyway, if you ask me marta would be spending that money on her OWN family. i also think after seeing the example of the thrombey family she wouldnt want to hoard it, just have enough to provide for her family, with enough on the side for any emergency and to help extended family/her larger community. personally, i think she would donate a lot of money to charities and as a nurse, i think she would focus on donating to hospitals and organizations focused on healthcare. i could also see herself using her money to fund anti-deportation activism groups esp in the modern timeline with the rise of ICE since its an issue personal to her. i could even see her using the notoriety of the knives out case to speak out against ICE and tell her mother's story to the media.
i do think one thing she would be divided on is the house. on the one hand, it holds such great personal memories for marta and her bond with harlan. but on the other hand, it holds terrible memories and is just way too big for one singular person/family to hoard. it would be something she would toil over for sure, wondering what harlan would've wanted. i think in her heart, she would feel this home deserved to be used for good, to be a community space, converted into a hospital or foster home. in the end, i think marta would decide on a sort of middle ground, with her family living in the house (if they want to) but also inviting her community in, offering it up as a space for local organizations to gather and even national charities/activism groups.
i don't know that's just how i feel about it. like i just dont think the movie about the cruelty of greed ended with marta giving the money back to the thrombeys in any shape way or form and similarly i do not think it ended in marta just keeping the money forever to build her own wealth.
