Linked Hybrid / Steven Holl Architects / Beijing, China
The Linked Hybrid is a megaform because it transforms the existing urban landscape with its strong topographical character. The project aims to counter the current urban developments in China by creating a new twenty-first century porous urban space that can be accessed from every side. The whole complex is a three-dimensional urban space in which buildings on the ground, under the ground and over the ground are fused together. The many passages through the project, make the Linked Hybrid an "open city within a city.”
BIG’s Big U proposal for NYC 2050 is an example of an urban mega form. It is a mega form because it redefines the urban landscape on a massive scale. It also continues the topography of NYC, and adds density to the already dense city.
Namba Parks is an example of a megaform because it is as Kenneth Frampton defined, a complex form that inflects the existing urban landscape and insinuates itself as a continuation of the surrounding topography. In the way that it is connected to Namba Station on the Nankai Railway. Frampton also states in his text that “It is essential that our horizontal megaforms serve as civic microcosms” and this project allows harmony to enter natural elements in a hard city landscape with its outdoor event space, roof top garden, and boutiques.
Skygarden | MVRDV | Seoul, South Korea Existing along a former city highway, the Skygarden serves as a way to unite urban fabric and act as a catalyst for future development within Seoul. The “pedestrianized viaduct” connects a variety of green spaces throughout the city and there are multiple extensions/additions planned for the future. Skygarden also creates a sense of place for itself that blurs the line between building and landscape through strategically curated gardens that highlight different sections of the path throughout each season. https://www.mvrdv.nl/projects/seoul-skygarden
