You first met yuji itadori in your first year of high school, he wore a hoodie under his school uniform, hood pulled up over his head. At the entrance ceremony you passed by him several times, his pink hair intrigued you, did he dye it? The two of you were in the same class, assigned to sit next to one another, at first yuji had no interest in talking to you. He appeared bored with life.
But after he forgot his lunch one time, you offered up yours, telling him it was okay since you always took an extra lunch. Since then he’d bug you about making him another, leaning his arm on his desk to rest his head on his fist. His eyes always seemed to draw you in but who knows. Yuji seemed like a nice enough guy.
Since then the two of you only got closer, spending each day at school together.
“Hey y/n, are you free after school? Wanna go to an arcade?” he asked, his face was pink but went back to normal when your eyes met his.
You agreed to go to the arcade, spending the whole day playing games and laughing with yuji. The two of you stumbled upon a photo booth, running in almost immediately. He paid of course, he’d paid for everything that day. You smiled like you never had before, it was so easy to get along with him. He held up a rabbit ear headband and you held up a mickey mouse one.
“Wait y/n we have to match, be minnie mouse.” you didn’t notice how his face grew red as you turned around to grab the minnie ears.
“This one?” you asked, looking at the camera, “oh yuji! We look so cute oh my god!”
The camera flashed as the two of you smiled brightly, leaning your heads towards each other, holding up a peace sign.
You took a total of four pictures, the second one was you guys making a silly face, the third one yuji had his arm wrapped around you and you looked at him with a red face, and the last one you wrapped your arms around yuji while he did a peace sign behind your head.
That was one of five times you hung outside of school together.
It was typically just you two, sure you had other friends, but your time was mostly spent together.
“y/n when is he going to ask you out?” your friend asked, shooting a glare at yuji who sat on the other side of the room glancing over at you occasionally.
“Ahh, uo-chan it’s nothing like that,” you waved it off, but couldn’t ignore the heat crawling up your neck. The blonde looked at you with a raised eyebrow.
“y/n it’s absolutely true!” tohru piped up, grabbing hold of your hands.
“It’s true, his waves become more chaotic when he looks at you,” hana looks at the pink haired boy, “which- he is now.”
“Guys it’s nothing like that really you’re reading too much into thi-”
“Hey, y/n can we talk?” yuji rubbed the back of his neck, putting his hand on the back of your chair, you nodded and left your friends to walk with him. Yuji led you to the courtyard, somewhat in the open, your friends were watching from the classroom window.
“What’s up?” you asked, heart racing faster, was this a confession?
“To be honest, my grandfather passed away. I’m going to be going to another school soon, you probably won’t see me again.” he spoke as if you were someone who bothered him.
“Oh, i’m so sorry yuji- are you okay?” his eyes widened, were you not upset with him?
The truth is that you were.
Did he not plan on keeping contact with you? Was he going to completely disappear? Did it not matter? The memories you two created and the endless amount of photos you had together, did it mean nothing to him?
“Oh- yeah i’m okay, uh- then, bye.” he raised his hand, walking away.
“Well hana-chan?? What did he say can you tell?” tohru asked, looking at her as they watched the scene unfold.
“His waves are sad, something bad happened but he’s more sad he has to leave her, and-” her gaze softened when she looked at you, “y/n’s waves are even worse.”
The girls frowned at the sight, watching you watch yuji walk away, his book bag thrown over his shoulder.
You didn’t see him after that and ignored the aching feeling in your chest, blocking his contact on your phone. He clearly didn’t want to remain in contact, so you wouldn’t bother him again. Months passed and seasons changed, it was a warm spring day, cherry blossom petals scattered the streets.
“Haha did you see yujis face?!” you heard a female voice yell, another voice laughed, a familiar voice.
“Yeah whatever!” he said.
Your head snapped, looking at them from a distance, the girl held her sides, yuji laughing in the middle, and a quieter boy next to him, a small smile on his face.
It took you months to get over your little crush on yuji, hiding all the photos you had of him in a box under your bed. He looked happy. But you couldn’t feel happy for him. He was wearing what looked to be a school uniform, if he was here, it meant he never truly left the city like he implied, he’s been here this whole time?
“Oh? Hey!” yuji yelled, waving his arm, he gestured for you to come over.
You didn’t want to. You really didn’t, your entire body wanted you to turn around and run away. But you found your feet disobeyed you, dragging you over.
You noticed how the smiles fell off of his friends.
“Hey, itadori.” you tried smiling, but it felt awkward, forced. The closer you got the more nervous you felt, watching the two stare you down.
A flicker of hurt and guilt flashed through his eyes, “this is my friend,” he introduced you, “and these are my friends from my new school, megumi fushiguro and nobara kugisaki!”
“Oh it’s nice to meet you both,” you greeted, you didn’t receive a reply from megumi but nobara shot you a big smile.
“Nice meeting you too!” she exclaimed.
You felt out of place, you wanted to give him some pathetic excuse and run away, yuji wrapped his arm around your shoulders, pulling you closer. You felt your face get hot, but why? He used to do this all the time. He lowered his head to look at you before smiling. “I have an idea, how about you come hang out with us? It’s been a while, y/n.”
The way he said your name and acted so casually made your chest tighten. How could he act like this was nothing? You hadn’t been in contact for days.
“Well- if no one else minds then sure!”
The four of you walked in silence before nobara peaked to look at you, “hey y/n so how do you know yuji?”
“Oh- i met itadori at school- at his old school,” you smiled, “we were acquaintances."
Hurt made its way to yujis face but he tried to shrug it off.
“Lets go to the arcade!” nobara exclaimed, pointing at the building which was a couple blocks away.
“Sure!” yuji smiled, “lets race!”
Soon, he and nobara shot off in a race with each other, leaving megumi and you alone. It was awkward.
“Do they always do that?” you asked, watching the two disappear down the road, megumi was silent at first, the cars making more noise than him.
“Yeah.” he stated, he seemed nervous around you.
“I’m sorry if it’s awkward being with me,” you started, his attention now fully on you, “i’m not close with itadori, but i’d like to get to know you guys.”
He smiled softly, “don’t try too hard, wanna race?”
Your heart beat faster, for the first time in a long time.
You nodded slowly before the boy began to take off, basically making you eat his dust but you laughed for the first time that evening nonetheless, chasing after him.
This time, you’d chase after a new boy.
The rest was history from there, you’d hang out with them more and even joined them on trips to shibuya and the beach. Nobara and you grew closer, going on multiple shopping trips with each other. You weren’t that close with megumi even though you wanted to be. He’d talked to you before but it was small, you had a suspicion he might’ve not liked you.
“Hey! It’s yujis birthday soon,” nobara started, “i’m going to buy some party supplies so you two wil have to figure out a present.”
You two? As in you and megumi? But you barely talked, how would you even figure out a present
before you could even interject, nobara shoved cash into your hand before running off.
"guess it's just us now" you smiled awkwardly, glancing at megumi who stared after nobara.
for some reason that thought made your chest feel heavy. he caught you staring and looked at you plainly.
"do you know what to get him?" he asked, it was like he was bothered just by asking.
"o-oh yeah! i have an idea i think" you replied, turning around to face the shopping centers. you pointed to the large mall.
the two of you walked in silence as you browsed a few stores but you hadn't found anything you thought yuji might like. he would've been happy with anything, maybe a music album? you wanted to get him something special.
"hey, look," megumi pointed at a store, "maybe you could get him a stuffed animal or something, or a charm."
"maybe, i don't know i just want to get him something nice, you know?"
he nodded, "well you know best."
your stomach growled, you've been in the mall for hours.
"are you hungry?" he looked like he was about to laugh.
"sorry, do you think we could eat something for a bit?" you asked.
he smiled for the first time and nodded.
it was strange. seeing him this way. he even bought you lunch instead of making you pay.
"i'm sorry we haven't talked much, i didn't want to be disrespectful to you and yuji" he stated.
your head jolted up, "disrespectful? how?"
"well don't you like him?"
the question caught you off guard.
"no of course not, yuji's my friend."
"oh, you're always together, that's why i thought that, sorry" he looked embarrassed.
"yeah well you could say the same about you and nobara!" you said that a little too loudly. embarrassment washed over you and you quickly got out of your seat.
"i think im just going to buy something later, i should get going, bye."
megumi sat there in shock as he watched you slowly walk away, maybe he shouldn't have asked that. but, your response made him smile to himself.
"excuse me? i saw you sitting alone and i was wondering if you were single?" a girl asked, clutching her phone.
megumi looked up, wiping the smile off his face. she seemed nice, but he looked in the direction that you stormed off in and thought about what to answer.
"yeah, no. i have a girlfriend, she just left" he replied, getting out of his seat and walking after you.
the girl frowned but it was too late to try and flirt with him. megumi had already disappeared from view.
he watched you from behind as you wandered around carelessly. many guys looked back at you or looked like they wanted to talk to you. it made him annoyed. you didn't look where you were going, focused on your phone. eventually he watched as you looked up and darted into a store.
he'd always noticed you. from the day he first met you, he felt a certain way towards you that he never felt for anyone else.
he noticed how when you smiled, the whole group smiled. times that felt hard or difficult, if he got to see even a glimpse of you, he'd feel happy. even if the only way he could see you was by looking into yujis room when he wasn't there. picture frames of you two, letters from you, and photos of you in yujis phone.
it was worth it for him, to stay so far away but yearn to be closer. he'd tried to ignore it, but he always ended up crawling back to you.
he never thought to act on his feelings, it would be dangerous. but loving you from a distance was enough for him. even if he had to watch you be with yuji.
he never did notice how while you smiled at yuji or nobara, your eyes drifted towards him. he was beautiful.
you wanted him so badly without knowing that he wanted you even more.
"it's too dangerous" he told himself, walking into barnes and noble. he'd watch you from a distance, like he always did.
however, he couldn't find you. he checked everywhere he thought you might be. worry began to settle in. where were you?
"so you don't have a boyfriend? a pretty little thing like you?"
his eyes darkened at the sight. you were pushed up against the wall. a strange man twisting a strand of your hair.
shakily you mustered up to courage to push against him.
"why? it's just now getting good, we could go back to my pla-" one second he was forcing himself on you and the next he was wriggling on the floor in pain.
megumi stood with a worried look before he ran up to you, making sure to keep distance so he didn't make you feel uncomfortable.
you looked at him with tears in your eyes, shaky hands reaching for his arms.
he told himself he couldn't do it, that it was dangerous, but he wrapped his arms around you tightly.
"megumi i- i want to go home" you spoke so softly it broke his heart.
the sun was already setting by the time you got out of the mall. you gripped onto the plastic bag containing yujis gift. walking silently besides megumi.
"it's not voluntarily" he spoke randomly.
"hanging out with nobara."
huh? where was this coming from? you looked at him confused. he turned to you before shoving his hands into his coat pocket.
"you said you could say the same about nobara and i, it's not voluntarily i'm with her, sometimes it's because yuji makes plans and doesn't show up, or we're just all together."
he didn't know why he was explaining himself.
but you laughed and it brought a smile to his face.
"what? why would you explain that to me?" you asked, between laughs, "even so, i'm glad there isn't anything between you."
your response was shy but true. you've felt drawn to him ever since you first met.
"i'm glad there isn't anything between you and yuji."
his response shocked you.
"and why would that make you glad?"
"for the same reason you're glad."
you both smiled to yourselves as the distance between you two eventually closed and you walked shoulder to shoulder.
"sorry, yuji" nobara apologized, placing a hand on the boys shoulder.
yuji looking dejected, continued to walk a distance behind you and megumi.
he and nobara noticed you two leaving the mall together and thought to greet you, but nobara held him back sensing something was different.
all he could do was watch sadly, tightening his grip on his phone. his thumb grazed over the power button and the brightness of his screen caught his eye.
oh. that's right, he's really lost.
eventually his phone turned off, but the image of you as his lock screen stayed in his mind.
“take care of her megumi,” he mumbled, he meant it, but the grip on his phone tightened, bending the frame slightly.
It’s been a while since the day at the mall with megumi. Since that day, you felt a shift in your emotions, feeling happier when megumi actually showed up to hangouts. You two didn’t talk much, but you didn’t have to, he’d show he cared in small ways. You didn’t know that at the time.
It was the summer festival now, you went out with yuji and his friends every chance you got, but, things were different. Despite yujis efforts, you couldn’t bring yourself to reconnect and have a conversation with him alone. He could tell you’d avoid him and talk to nobara instead who took a liking to you. From someone elses perspective, it would’ve looked like you and nobara had known each other your whole life.
“y/n! Oh- is that what you’re wearing?” she asked, you were at her house wearing a shirt and pants, you didn’t have a kimono.
“Um- yeah pretty much,” you mumbled, becoming shy all of a sudden.
“Girl- let me help you, is that okay?” she smiled, you nodded and she immediately dragged you to her room.
Nobara let you get ready in her room, she’d already done your hair which was tied up with a beautiful red and gold hair pin, and your makeup. She waited outside with yuji and megumi who complained you were taking a long time to get ready.
The door to nobaras house opened, “is this okay?” a quiet voice asked.
You stepped out wearing a beautiful red kimono, geta (wood sandals) peaking out from underneath slightly.
Yujis face flushed with pink while megumi averted his eyes, nobara took notice and wrapped her arms around the boys’ shoulders.
“Aw doesn’t she look beautiful, boys?!” she exclaimed, reaching out for your hand which you took gratefully. The summer festival was full of people, you pushed past the crowd before finally reaching a food stand.
“Barbecue skewer?” nobara asked, holding one out, you nodded and munched on the meat, it was still hot.
It burnt your tongue, yuji watched as you chatted nobaras ear off, something you used to do with him.
Yuji turned to you, “y/n can-”
“Megumi!” you called, you didn’t hear yuji at all as you were already making your way towards megumi.
Yuji watched in silence, he wondered what you were saying to him, but something inside him snapped as he saw something flicker in megumis eyes. Adrenaline beginning to pump in his veins, yuji walked over, resting his hand on your shoulder.
Your body tensed, remembering the last time yuji did something like this. “y/n can we talk?” he asked, and it replayed that day all over again in your head. You bit the inside of your cheek, nodding, and waving goodbye to megumi who looked annoyed.
“What’s up?” you asked, it sent a shiver down your spine, it was like PTSD.
“I know why you’re upset but i’m trying hard to make up for i-”
“Yeah like how?” you interrupted, a lump forming in your throat.
“I- y/n,” his expression softened, “i want to be your best friend, i- i want to be closer to you than everyone else, please just let me make it up to you, i made so many mistakes, i couldn’t even begin to list them all.”
“List your mistakes to me, please tell me what it is you think i’m upset about.” you were trying to keep your composure, the fireworks would be lit soon.
Nobara watched with megumi from a distance, noticing how your body became more and more tense.
Only megumi noticed how your hands shook slightly.
Yuji wasn’t able to list anything which only prompted more disappointment from you, you’ve been hanging out with them all this time and yet, you feel out of place all over again.
“Fine, i’ll do it for you,” your lips quivered, “you told me out of nowhere you were leaving, talking to me like i’ve been a bother to you this whole time, you made me think you just moved to a new city. And even after all that, you could’ve contacted me but- but you never did itadori.”
He winced, he missed when you called him yuji or when you would just smile at him instead of faking a small smile. He never failed to notice when your body tensed, when your eyes diverted from his, and when your eyes were on someone else. He wanted you back. He knew he messed up, he knew that.
“Itadori i-” your voice tore through his thoughts, “i liked you and i thought you felt the same, but- things changed, if we ever did try to be friends again, it wouldn’t be right now.”
He stood there, eyes wide at your confession, this whole time you felt the same he did.
“But- things changed.” what did that mean?
You began to walk away, quietly excusing yourself to nobara and megumi before disappearing in the crowd. He knew something was off the day he followed behind you and megumi, he figured it was over for him, but he watched you closely since then. It was only then when yuji understood what you meant by things changing as he watched megumi chase after you, something that surprised both him and nobara.
Nothing really changed between you and megumi, so he figured, maybe he had a chance. But watching megumi chase you, when he wouldn’t do that often for someone else, he felt his heart ache.
You crouched down on a path in the middle of the forest far away from the festival crowd, fireworks beginning to shoot off into the sky, your quiet sobs being masked by the loud boom. Tears clouded your vision as you attempted to look up at the fireworks, it was usually your favorite part of the festival but your body shook as sobs left your mouth.
You really wanted to keep it together in front of them, you felt embarrassed, and honestly you felt sad yuji didn’t even understand what he did that hurt you. You looked at the ground watching your tears fall into the dirt.
You felt a gentle hand on your back, forcing you to look up, embarrassed you turned the other way quickly trying to wipe your tears.
“Oh my god im so sorry, please go back and enjoy the fireworks,” your voice was groggy, but megumi didn’t judge you.
He tucked a stray strand of hair behind your ear, before immediately retracting his hand back, truth be told he didn’t know why he chased after you, you hadn’t talked since the day at the mall.
“y/n, you asked me to watch the fireworks with you, here i am,” he spoke softly, you were still turned away from him.
“Yeah well obviously, it’s alright. you can go watch it with nobara, i’ll join you guys later,” you said quietly, your eyes were red.
Megumi sighed before helping you up, he held his arm around your shoulder, leading you down the path.
“You make it so difficult,” megumi mumbled, he didn’t think you heard and you figured he wouldn’t have wanted you to bring it up.
“What do i make difficult now?” you were frustrated, you broke out of his hold, storming off but he continued to chase you.
The shrine the festival was at was huge. You ran until you reached an area with a bridge, you ducked under it, sitting down in the dirt. You made a mental note to wash nobaras kimono later. The air was becoming more humid, you could smell the rain that was about to come down.
Megumi sighed before ducking under the bridge, squatting down in front of you, reaching for your hands which clutched your knees.
“y/n, it didn’t mean anything bad please don’t misunderstand me,” he spoke softly, you looked up at him.
You had to cut him some slack, but, things had been awkward between the two of you since the mall.
“Then what does it mean?” your voice was hoarse, you wanted to run away, wanted to cry, but you couldn’t.
“You make it difficult to not love you,” he smiled, cupping your chin, slowly pulling your face close to his. Your cheeks began to heat up, “and yes you heard that right,” his voice deepening, lowering into a whisper, “i love you.”
