Part 12 in The Demon Weapons Winchester.
“Don’t do this to me, Dean.” You begged him. “You promised.”
“You really shouldn’t take your eyes off your opponent.” Bundy chided.
“Dean-”
“No resonating.” He growled.
“Guys!” Sam was practically screaming.
“Ready or not.” Bundy singsonged, the last of the bandages falling away. “Here I come.”
“Dean?”
“No.”
“Guys!”
“Time to die.” You could practically smell his breath as he rushed you.
“I said enough!” John screamed from behind him, Stein tsking him and shaking his head for interfering.
Bundy turned, sneering at John. “You’re not my type, get lost.” He swatted John, knocking him back.
“You need to trust me, Dean.” Silence. “You promised.”
“I will not hurt you again. I will not be the reason you die.”
“If you keep doing this I will die!” You screamed.
“And it will be a beautiful death.” Bundy grinned, attention back on you again.
“I thought you trusted me. I thought we were partners, a team. Was it all a lie?” Your hands started shaking again, chest pain coming back and you felt like you might throw up.
“Stein?” John glanced over as he got up. “What’s going on?”
“Panic attack.” He answered calmly. “She has anxiety, didn’t you know? She’s afraid of being left alone again.”
“I ca-” Your breath started coming in heavier. “Please..” You dropped to your knees.
“No, I didn’t..” John got scared as he watched you drop to your knees. “We need to step in.” He started for you, but Stein held him back. Bundy rushed you again. “Stein we need-”
“Wait.”
Just before Bundy reached you, Dean changed, standing tall in front of you. In the blink of an eye, he grabbed Sam out of your hand and raised him up. “Stay away from my meister.” He growled, pulling the trigger and shooting Bundy right between the eyes.
His head flew back, and his body followed. The sound that came out of him was inhuman. Dean kept shooting, all the rage and emotion he was feeling coming out shot after shot. It wasn’t until the tell tale signs of black ribbon and smoke circled around and disappeared into a soul that he finally let his brother go, Sam falling from his hand and transforming back into his human form before he could hit the ground.
“Get your soul, Sammy.” Dean turned and started away.
“Dean?” you cried, still with your eyes squeezed shut.
“I’m sorry. But I’m not ready to try again yet.”
John hurried over, wrapping his arms around you. “Hey, we’re here.. I got you.” He pulled you tight against him and tried to help ground you again. “They had your back, as promised.” He ran his hand over your hair. “Dean kept you safe, Sammy got his first soul. It all worked out, princess. It’s done.”
“Dean?” You knocked gently on his door. He had locked himself in there when you got home last night, not a word to anyone, and as far as you knew, he hadn’t come out. You were starting to wonder if he had left while you slept, but when you gently opened the door, you saw him lying in his bed staring up at the ceiling. “Dean, come on-”
“Maybe you should find another weapon.” He mumbled.
You froze, starting to feel the anxiety hit again. “What? W-why?”
He shook his head. “I resonate with you, I could kill you. I don’t, it could get you killed. What kind of a weapon am I? Maybe I really am meant to be alone.”
“Don’t you ever say that again.” He turned and looked at you, anger and fear fighting each other on your face, tears welling up in your eyes. “You did what I asked of you, Dean, just not how I asked it.”
“I almost-”
“You had my back. You proved to me once again that I could trust you with my life. I shut down and you stepped up. If it wasn’t for you, I’d be dead.” you threw yourself on him and hugged him tight. “Thank you.”
Reluctantly, his arms went around you. “If it wasn’t for me it wouldn’t have happened.” He mumbled, holding you tight, as if afraid to let go.
“I was having a panic attack, Dean.” his brow furrowed, and he tilted his head to look at you. “I couldn’t beat him with you two. Sam said I was shaking, and I was. I was starting to feel the strain, I was getting tired, and the only way I could think to beat him, you refused. And it wasn’t that you refused, Dean, I expected that.” You shifted and looked up at him. “I was scared you were right, I wasn’t ready. I was scared I’d get you both killed.”
Dean pulled your head back down against his chest and kissed the top of your head. “We’ll figure something out.”
“I- I already talked to Dr Stein. Your dad and Lord Death agree it’s a good idea.”
“Oh?”
“I’m going to try resonating with you guys one at a time.”
“Sweetheart-”
“I’ll start with Sam, if you want.” You looked up at him again. “I don’t want to push you, but it’s something we need to do, we need to see if maybe it’s trying to handle both of you at once. Because if I can at least resonate with one of you…”
“Yeah, okay.” Dean nodded. “Sammy has better control, always did. Start with him, and I’ll keep watch.”
“You just want to get out of class.” You teased.
“Oh, is it going to be in the mornings again?”
“You know damn well it will be. He has remedial classes to teach in the afternoon.”
“Sweetheart, we are the remedial class.” He laughed.
Sam found you curled up with Dean and asleep. He let out a heavy sigh. “How you holding up, kid?” John asked. He had come over for diner, wanting to check in on everyone.
Sam shrugged. “Fine, I guess. I should be happy, I got my first soul, but..” he motioned to the scene in front of him.
“Did you know she has anxiety?”
“What?” Sam asked, looking up at his father confused.
John nodded. “She's terrified of being alone. Stein told me. Makes sense why she'd want two weapons.”
“That can't be right.” Sam looked back over at you. “She's always been alone, since her parents died.. she's done everything on her own…”
“But she's not anymore, and she's afraid it'll happen again. That she'll lose the people she cares most for and wind up alone. Just like Dean is. Your mother…” John sighed. “It hurt Dean. He hasn't let anyone close since. Only you.” John looked to his youngest. “They need you, Sammy. Go on.”
Sam looked back at his father who motioned into the room with his chin. And without any words, Sam knew what to do.
Moving forward, he climbed into Dean's bed behind you and wrapped his arms around you. When you stirred and glanced back at him, his voice was soft and soothing. “We'll never leave you.”
You gave him a nod and snuggled back down, “Thank you, Sam.”
Dean opened his eyes and gave his brother a confused look. But the look he got in return told him Sam would fill him in later. With a content sigh, Dean closed his eyes once more and fell asleep to the warm feeling of being surrounded by the two people that meant the most to him in this world.
With a smile, John slowly walked away from the door. He locked the front door with his key as he left, never had he been so happy to return home to an empty house.
