Sushi date, continued with bookstore visit 😌✨
I don’t think I’ve actually hung out with a fluent English speaker since Monday... But this week I had a strawberry parfait at Gigi’s with Hiking Club, and then I got invited to Meka-shabushabu at the Youth Hostel the next night. I almost didn’t want to go but @origami10 talked me into it and I’m glad she did. Swordfish has a lot of mercury though so I think I gotta tone down my fish intake this week...
Our teacher changes were announced yesterday, but my elementary school sent me home early after graduation was over, so I only found out a few things from the grapevine. Nothing was totally unexpected, but I was surprised, and though I think things are going to be okay in the end, maybe even better, I’m just dreading April and all the uncertainty until then.
The main reason I am here for this buffet is the unlimited serving of the Sashimi Moriawase (Assorted Raw Fish). Mitsuba has more variety than most other all-you-can-eat places like Hamachi (Yellow Tail), Shime Saba (Vinegared Mackerel) and Hokkigai (Surf Clam), typically not available on the menu at most other buffet locations. The raw fishes are sliced thick and they were just so fresh, sweet and succulent that we kept ordering more plates of them.
Among the various cuts of sashimi from the menu, I can’t helped but kept picking up piece after piece of my favourite Mekajiki (Swordifsh); dipping it into the soya sauce and wasabi condiments, before sending it into my mouth. The light saltiness of the soya sauce brought out the sweetness of this firm flesh raw fish. Umai...
Though one is not supposed to eat sushi at a buffet to maximum the “ROI” (Return on Investment), I went ahead and gotten the Sake Aburi (Seared Salmon Sushi with Mayonnaise), Sake Mentai Aburi (Seared Salmon Sushi in Mentaiko Sauce) and Sake Mayo Ball (Salmon Sushi Ball with Mayonnaise). Big mistake!!! All three were a total disappointment due to the fact the sushi rice was too mushy and not well seasoned.
First to be served was this Pitan Tofu (Century Egg Tofu). The tofu was silky smooth with a savoury century egg yolk mayo and bits of egg white topped with tobiko (flying fish roe). Bits of crispy tempura batter was thrown in for added crunch which upped the must order again value.
My colleague wanted the Maguro Natto (Tuna & Fermented Bean). Natto (納豆) is often considered an acquired taste because of its powerful smell, strong flavor, and sticky, slimy texture. She offered some to me and I struggled to finish the sticky beans which seem to spin off more strands of silk than a spider. No more stinky beans for me…
Next up, my favourite Sashimi platter of Hamachi (Yellowtail), Maguro (Tuna), Mekajiki (Swordfish), Sake (Salmon) and Tako (Octopus) with a side of Tamago Yaki (Japanese Egg Roll). The slices of fish were fresh but somehow I found the seafood lacking in sweetness and that bothered me or at the very least reduced the urge to order more again.
Both the Chawanmushi and the Ikura Chawanmushi were eggy in flavour but not as smooth and savoury enough maybe due to not adding enough soup stock in the egg custard. If you asked me to pick one, the salmon roe at least imparted some briny bursts to the otherwise dull appetizer.
After the lackluster dishes, the Takoyaki was a surprise hit with me. This delicious wheat based snack was served hot with a piece of octopus flesh in the moist centre, sprinkled with bonito flakes and a squeeze of mayonnaise. The Soft Shell Crab was oishii if not a tad oily. Never had a soft shell crab that was this meaty.
