Medication Brain-Hack Tip
I'm sure people with severe executive dysfunction like myself know how hard it is to remember things, and even when you do, sometimes your brain is just not cooperating and you just decide you simply don't feel like taking your pills today. So I thought I'd share the little thing I did recently that's made all the difference in my ability to take my medication every day, and has drastically improved my functioning.
Step 1: get a robust pill-organizer (or a small normal one if you only have two or three pills to worry about). This is what mine looks like:
Each day is a separate organizer that you can pop out and take with you if you're going to be gone all day and need to take your meds on the go.
Step 2. Put this pill organizer where you can reach from your bed. Whether that means it's on on the pillow next to you, or on your bedstand, or wherever else that's close. This is what's made the biggest difference so far for me. It's harder for your brain to justify neglecting something when it's literally right there, and it's much easier to get in a habit of taking something if your brain associates the habit simply with the act of waking up in bed, rather than getting up at a certain time.
Anyway, hopefully this helps at least one person with ADHD or depression or whatever else might be making it hard to take your meds! I never realized how huge of an impact even just one missed dose a week can have on whether or not a pill works properly, so anything we can do to avoid that is super important!
so many self-care posts on tumblr just tell you to eat chocolate and watch movies, but that’s not gonna help much if you’re in a depressive episode, or something worse. sure, that can help if you have a bad day, but if you’re struggling with a mental illness, it’ll just make things worse. so i created this list for other mentally ill people who are sick of seeing those posts and need some real tips.
hygiene. it’s really hard to feel better when you’re greasy and you haven’t changed your underwear in two weeks. if you can, shower. that’s gonna be the best thing - by far - that you can do. but if you can’t? i get it, it can seem like a lot. spray some dry shampoo in your hair and brush it through; change your underwear and your socks, even if you put your same clothes back on; brush your teeth, or at least swill some mouthwash around your mouth; rinse your face with some warm water and dry it; put on some deodorant.
eat something. forgetting to eat is so common, but is one of the first steps to dragging yourself out of a depressive episode. eating anything will help, but preparing something nutritious will go a long way. it’s okay if all you can manage is a granola bar or some cereal, if that’s the case, grab a piece of fruit or some veggies too. your body and your brain will thank you. drinking is also so important. grab your biggest glass or bottle and fill her up with some cold water, and drink the whole thing. fill it up again and take it to your room. i keep a full water bottle in my room, along with some relatively healthy snacks, so that this step takes minimal effort.
environment. struggling with your mental health often leads to your bedroom or home becoming messy. it’s okay ! it happens to most of us. but cleaning it up will really help. it’s okay if you can only manage one room, or one section of one room. start with your bedroom. crack open a window. take out all the cups and plates. put away any clothes - even if you just stuff them in your closet. pack away any stuff you won’t need for the rest of today - school supplies, books, etc. you’re probably spending most of your time in bed, right? change the sheets, if you can. if not, pick up your blanket and shake off any crumbs, and turn your pillow(s) over.
exercise. before you skip this section, you absolutely do not have to go the gym or go on a five mile jog. you absolutely do not ! you just need to move your body for a lil bit. taking a walk is something that really helps me. go out in the fresh air for a bit, don’t go on your phone, look at pretty flowers, and clear your head. yoga is also supposed to be very useful, though i’ve never tried it. if this seems too much, at least stretch your limbs and wrists/ankles, especially if you’ve been sat in the same position for a while.
reach out. letting someone know what’s going on and how you’re struggling will help more than you know. having someone there, to distract you or to just talk it out, will be the thing that helps you the most when you feel like this. this person can be anyone you trust - a friend, a parent, a sibling, grandma, literally anyone you can rely on. if you do only one of these, please choose this one.
relax. make sure this is the last one you do, if you choose to do multiple of these. now you’ve taken care of all the stupid things that humans need to stay alive, you can take it easy. this is the time for the cutesy tumblr brand self-care - watch a movie, listen to music, eat some candy, whatever you want to do that will make you smile.
be kind to yourself. i know it’s hard, but you’re trying. that’s all that matters. i’m so proud of you for hanging on and pulling yourself out of this spiral. please know that you’re loved, cared about and needed. you’re going to be okay, and things will be brighter soon, i promise.
Fellow ADHD (/anyone this applies to) folks who have issues brushing their teeth regularly I have tips that have been helping me!
• There’s this app called Brush DJ that I’ve been using which has been a massive help!
It connects to your music and will play a 2 minute long clip while you brush- you can set up notifications for whenever you want, I have 2pm and 12am bc I’m a night owl lmfao. I like it because it’s not childish like a lot of teeth brushing apps.
You can also customize the colours too which I thought was neat :)
• I bought a soft/fine bristled brush and holy shit it’s made such a difference, it’s great if you have sensitive gums!
• I also bought some mild mint toothpaste that doesn’t have SLS. That’s what makes toothpaste foamy, which was one of the things I hated the most about brushing my teeth. SLS can also irritate teeth and gums too!
keys to taking care of yourself
hydration, get up and drink a glass of water
fresh air, open the curtains and windows
medication, take it if you need to
food, make yourself a snack or a meal
hygiene (primary), change your underwear/clothing and pull your hair back and wash your face and use the bathroom
hygiene (secondary), change into a proper outfit and have a shower and brush your teeth and hair
sleep, take a nap if you need it
light, especially if it’s daytime do your best to get out into any sort of natural light or sunlight otherwise get those lamps on
emotional release, don’t hold back if you need to cry or write down what you feel or do some exercise
habitat, take a look at where you’re residing and make sure your bed isn’t piled up and there’s a path through your room
contact, reach out to someone and let them know what’s going on and ask for help if you need it
Hey Sophie Turner...
...I get that you’re trying to help, but responding to a troll’s comments with a bad take of “Oh, all of you who joke about MI must be so privileged not to know what it is like...” is not helping. It compounds the problem. Take it from a diagnosed Bipolar. Trust me, mocking my own crazy has helped immensely and comedy is one of the best ways to help yourself. That goes for my loved ones, too.
^That, and other mental illness humor, such as with Hannah Gadsby’s Nanette, Natalie Wynn joking about her dysphoria, and others has done a LOT to help people like me. I know you’re passionate about this, but that is all the more reason to pick your words more carefully and consider how shaming you, in kind, may sound in words like, “People who think it’s okay to make jokes about mental illness, I think you must be lucky...” (A LOT OF US ARE REALLY NOT) to someone like me, who needs humor to get through things. And yes, it further stigmatizes illness to make it seem untouchable. It isn’t. I grasp my illness in my hands every day and wrestle with it. And laugh at it as I do.
I have sung a song with the lyrics I COULD REALLY ROCK A TIN FOIL HAT! with tears in my eyes after getting diagnosed. It’s liberating.
I’m not going to name the vile woman who started this bullshit, but I am going to ask people in general spreading what Sophie said to reconsider and hold her accountable and approach this topic with more nuance, even if she means well.
I IDENTIFY AS A MESS.
That’s all.
Opening up to your therapist
I know it's hard, and awkward... But your therapist cares, and they're there to listen. They actually really like it when you speak to them about the big stuff or the deep stuff you didn't want to talk about. Because it makes it easier for them to help you! You won't regret opening up a little more! You can do this!
Tip for my fellow psychological-disorder-havers
If you’re in a place, and you’ve been holding it together, but you’re having a really hard time and you’re tired, drop the mask.
I’m serious, just let it all go at once. When you do that, whoever is making you stay will show immediate concern, and let you go/take you back home.
Note that this only works if you’ve been masking well up until the point of the drop. If not, you won’t be taken as seriously.
I’ve used this many times when with my parents. It works like a charm.
