A while ago, I played with a trope generator, and got the fantastic combination of “Mermen!AU” and “Speed dating”. I had no choice.

(This fic is for @yodas-yo-yo, @notvirginawoolf and @seanconneraille. This thing would not exist without them, for various reasons, and I adore them.).

“You are going.”

“I am certainly not.”

Lydia huffs, her tail whipping sharply under her. Disturbed sand troubles the water between them both. The long strands of Lydia’s hair cling to the arches of her body in her agitation, the pale red striking against the electric blue and black of her scales.

Sprawled on the floor, Stiles observes her theatrics with affection, lazily flicking his own tail to get rid of the sand sinking back down all over him.

Lydia is stunning in her irritation, as she is in everything else.

Generations ago, when peace with the Land had been unheard of, she would have been venerated. Sailors would have jumped overboard in the hope of touching her; lost treasures at sea in the hope of seducing her.

Even now, Stiles can see how the human scientists stare at her while she destroys their hypotheses. The war between their species has been over for centuries but, for Lydia, they would all jump and drown with smiles on their faces.

“Stiles,” Lydia snaps, batting her hair away from her cheek and mouth, annoyed.

“Lydia,” he parrots, stretching obnoxiously.

They have known each other too long now for her bewitching powers to work on Stiles. The silence between them grows.

“Why?” She finally grits, more challenge than question.

Stiles squints at her. “Wait. Is my situation that disastrous?”

“You're pretty and smart,” she admits graciously, “but if you don’t make drastic changes to your lifestyle, you will grow old alone and turn into one of these weird mermen that follow whales around and think they can speak to them.”

Since he's usually chilling on the shore it wasn't hard for scientist to find him. But don't worry he's not in captivity they made a pool connected to the ocean just for him. He always goes there for free food and to chat with a certain scientist

mermen!au time - kuroko is a bioluminescent leafy seahorse never mind the probably false biological info about that and he often gets overlooked throughout the day or in shallow waters due to his rather plain coloring, but is actually a rather fierce hunter in the deep sea to which he is rather suited, hence his slowness in comparison to many of the other mermen living closer to the surface

There’s so many things that are wrong in this picture, but oh well, it’s just a self-indulgent (I hope I use this word in the right meaning ><) doodle of Ivan spoon-feeding his merman boyfriend who refuses to eat with proper ustensils, like said here (linked to this drawing)
