The Bearing of Gratitude (Emma Clark & Michael Donnay)

They lay in neat rows

No less straight than the tents

Covering legionaries millennia ago

Lined up along the river

The elegance of the grid

A small solace to those forever aligned

With some surveyor's bob

Unable to revel in the messy unevenness

Of the village cemetery or the parish graveyard

  Uniforms pressed as crisply as the corners of the flag

Creased to perfection

It was never meant to be a shroud

But shrouded grief more effectively 

Than the black the families were told to wear

The boys saw it coming

With their sight locked straight ahead

Necks taut and backs stiffened

A brother on each arm

Holding without touching

A brother on each arm

  Bugles struggle through silence

Filled with the clamor of combat survived

But not outlived

The memories of those who came safe home

Crowd out those whose calls we answer

Only when these little flags flutter

And aged eulogizes ancient 

And hallowed words clutter hallowed spaces

Not when, returning to the car,

We pass them shrouded in flags

Of tattered gray and black

  The books are written with more ease

Than our letters ever were

Legionaries now strewn along

The playground battlefield

It is their story as much as our own

It would seem

Patriotism the birthright of us all

Fighting for a land full of people

Who couldn't know

We walk silently 

Nod politely, stoically

Allowing history to be written

By those who haven't lost the words

For what it is to lose a brother

  Each morning stepping lightly

Cautious of the last night's battle

You glide among the shadows

Playing your best ghost

Between burnt out tanks and towns

Emptied of people, pets, home

You almost reach the -

Wounded, you slump against the wall

To slowly pick the plastic soldiers from your feet

  Forward, onward, stepping in time

Children bear the legacy

But may never really know

You endeavor to help them understand

Or perhaps choose not to 

The call to serve

Is never borne lightly

The smallest noises

Snap you back and forth

Between reality and a world apart

The bearing of gratitude

Is never done easily

Onward, forward, you march all the same
