@taylorswiftmicrofic Day 6: Loaded- Marylene (WC: 509)
Mary was going to propose tonight.
She and Marlene had been dating for four years and the topic of marriage had come up in conversations more than once in the last few months. They’ve had this vacation planned since March. Marlene always asked about her home town. After years of begging Mary to show them around Portugal, she finally caved and booked a romantic getaway for the two of them.
As the front door opened abruptly, Mary quickly slid the ring in the pocket of her black handbag as the sound of heavy boots echoed off the tiled floor of the entry way.
“Alright. Luggage is loaded, you ready?” Marlene asked, pushing themselves up onto their tip toes to place a soft kiss on Mary’s forehead.
Mary nodded, wrapping an arm around their waist as they lead her to the car. Lisbon was just a short flight from London, and Mary had made preparations for the night in advance.
For as long as she had known them, Marlene had always initiated every new step. It was Marlene who asked to be more than friends, Marlene who gifted Mary a house key and an offer to live together, Marlene made the first move every step of the way. It was also Marlene who took on the more traditionally ‘masculine’ roles in the relationship. It was for these reasons that everyone expected they’d be the one to propose too.
Mary couldn’t let that happen. She knew she had to be the one to propose first. James, Marlene’s childhood best friend, had helped her pick out the perfect ring months ago, and Mary’s mother had given her the perfect venue, opportunity, and ideas to make it happen. Marlene deserved to feel adored, cherished, wanted, and chosen- because she was. She was everything.
In a little less than three hours, the couple landed in the very city that had made Mary the woman she was today. Her younger brother picked them up in their parent’s station wagon to the small house on the edge of town. The very one Mr. McDonald had built himself before Mary was even thought into existence. This was their first stop.
After dropping off their things, Mary brought up sightseeing and they were off. Mary spent the evening showing off every location she had visited, every spot that had ever held many or importance to her as a young girl. Marlene soaked in every word, relishing in the dozens of cute childhood stories their girlfriend usually kept under close lock and key.
Finally, at the end of the night, Mary led Marlene to a small shop overlooking a soccer field- the very place Mary first realized she liked girls. When she pulled out the delicate silver ring, Marlene picked her up and spun her.
“Yes! If my answer wasn’t already obvious.” Marlene sat her back down with a joyful laugh.
“You know, I can’t believe you beat me to it. I planned on asking for your father’s blessing in the morning.”
No moment had ever compared to this.
