« March 11, 2021 » For my teaching preparation class, we get paired with a teacher at a local elementary school and get to do observations and student teach for their class, and this morning was my first observation session. I’m paired with a 3rd grade class, and it was so much fun watching the students be so excited to learn!! I forgot how positive and lively elementary students are, so it definitely made my day!

Day 11- What’s something that you’ve always wanted to do but haven’t got the chance to do so?

I’ve always wanted to travel abroad! I’ve travelled a bit across the US, but I’ve never left the country. I was supposed to go on a cruise to Mexico with my best friend and her family last summer, but obviously that didn’t happen because of the pandemic. Whenever I am able to travel abroad someday, I hope to go to Europe (specifically Germany, England, France, Italy, and Greece)

9th September - Human Nerve

Human nerve cells look so cool, the patterning is so pretty! The darker spots in the pink splotches are neuron cell bodies (I think). I believe the larger vesicle-looking structures may be support cells from the nervous system, which is why they’re visible in comparison to the neurons.

I’ve officially caught up on content, but my desk has gotten so cluttered 😥. Am I the only one who finds it so much easier to think when I’m writing instead of typing? I’ve got so many loose notes from my essay everywhere, it’s hard to keep track of everything. I have an opinion piece due at the end of the week and I’m struggling to find good sources to include. If it’s good enough it might get published, so I’m working really hard on it. 

I decided to paint my window frame today instead of study, I needed a bit of a break. Whoever painted it before me used ceiling paint, so it was in need of a fix. It took up the majority of my day, so I haven’t gotten much work done. It looks so fresh now though, so I’m happy I did it 😊

Tomorrow is a big study day, I need to finish up my draft for my essay and start revising for my mid-sem 📚

4th September - Mammal Cerebellum

Another photo from my last lab, this one is the cerebellum of a mammal. The cerebellum is like a little brain underneath the main part of the brain and is important in balance and coordination. You can see it in my post about my brain dissection. The patterns the stain makes with the different components of the brain’s neurons are pretty cool.

I’ve almost caught up on content, just one more 2 hour lecture for neuro to go. I’ve planned out most of my current assessments too, and I’m going to start on them soon. I’m considering entering a scientific writing competition on how covid-19 has affected my field of study too, but I’m not sure I have the time. The top prize is $500 though, and I’m in a tight spot for affording study supplies. The topic is interesting too, and I think if I work smart I can combine the research portion with one of my assignments. On top of all that it’d be super cool to win a writing competition 🤩

I started cleaning out my desk yesterday and it’s so messy 🙁 I’ve had to pull out my old laptop to get my old assignments backed up, and there’s loose paper everywhere. I’ve cleaned out one of two draws so far, and the second is the worst 😓. I moved my desk as well, but I’m considering moving it again so it’s facing my bookshelves, just for the view. I haven’t had the chance to read in the past few days, but seeing as I’m almost caught up I might give myself a break soon.

13th September - Mammal Spinal Cord

No cool patterns in this image like the last few, but it’s easier to identify the structures. This is a segment of spinal cord, so it’s densely packed with neurons. The dark spots are most likely the nuclei of different neurons, and the light pink stain indicates the rest of the neuron which is largely made up by the axons. 

Once again I am falling a bit behind in my studies, but I’m on top of my assignments (mostly 😅). I finished the final touches on my opinion piece and I’m ready to submit it, and I’ve started up on a video presentation assignment. I’m hoping to get a start on the writing competition piece soon as well, I think I’ve got a really strong topic. I wrote up some pretty study notes from the first 2 weeks of neuroscience so I can consult them during the test, but I need to revise some of the later content, which looks challenging. 

My nonna brought me a croissant for breakfast, and it was delicious 😍. I’ve been waking up constantly throughout the week, and it’s been so refreshing to get out of bed before 9am. I find it so much easier to study in the morning. I wish in-person classes would start up again soon, but it’s looking unlikely we’ll get anymore this year 🙁. Hopefully everything starts getting back to normal by next year. 

Tomorrow is Monday, which means more online classes and an increased workload. I’m hoping this week has a bit less content, just so I can work on getting all my assignments done instead of learning new content.

2nd September - Mammal Cerebrum and Nervous System Notes

I took this photo down a microscope last time we got into the labs, and I have a few more saved up. This is the cerebrum of a mammal, which is the outer layer of the brain. The small black dots are most likely the nuclei of the neurons, which is super cool. I can’t wait to get back into labs on a more regular basis.

I spent the past few days at my partner’s house relaxing, and I managed to fall a week behind in my neuro notes so this week is most likely going to be heavy on writing 😅 This weeks content is motor control and analgesics, which shouldn’t be too boring, but I have to catch up on last weeks content as well. I’ve also received a new assignment to write an opinion piece for a scientific journal, and apparently it has a chance of being published if it’s good enough 🤩. I know it’s extremely unlikely, but I can’t help holding out hope.

I finally got my hands on the next novel in the series I was reading, and I’m hoping to give myself a few breaks throughout the week to read in the sun, whenever its out ☀. Hopefully this week I can also try something creative, like short story writing or drawing. I’ve been feeling really motivated for the past day to get on top of everything so it’s feeling promising.
