Crickets can be heard chirping, the soft symphony of the insects mixing with the salty waves crashing against the shore. The soft, tan grains of sand squish between Zuko's toes as he lays back, an uncharacteristically calm expression overtaking the boy's face.
If anyone were to ask, Zuko would have to say he feels his calmest when he's at the beach. Ember Island has always been his home away from home, even if his family never made said 'home' feel safe.
He loves the calm of the night, the softness of the sand, the blue stretch of ocean that seems to go on forever. He loves it more than anything.
The crunch of feet against the sand break him out of his reverie, making him look up at the cause of the noise.
He smiles.
Not the cheesy, awkward smile he does when he doesn't really know what to say to someone in a conversation. Not the polite smile he used to do when his father would make the family parade through the Fire Nation villages. Not the angry smile he does when he manages to get his much awaited revenge.
This smile is soft. Kind, almost.
But how could it not be? How could he not be soft, and kind, and affectionate when it's them?
Y/n sits beside him, plopping right down in the sand with a small 'oomph!'. Zuko feels his heart flutter.
Their voice is quiet, careful not to break whatever atmosphere Zuko has created around himself. "Thought i'd check on you. Everyone else is sleeping."
He tilts his head.
"You should go to sleep, too. We have a long day tomorrow. It is not smart to stay awake this late." He says, and he can already feel a dark flush creeping its way up his neck.
Y/n laughs, and Zuko can't tell if it's that beautiful, melodic sound that makes him shiver, or the salty breeze that passes through the air.
"You're up now. Why can't i be up?" They tease.
Zuko shrugs simply. "I need to think of training tactics, and this is the only quiet time i have. You do not need to think. So...bedtime."
He rubs the back of his neck awkwardly.
Oof, that was a rough watch, buddy.
Y/n sighs, leaning back on their elbows and sinking into the sand. Their voice carries through the tension between them casually, like Zuko's not overthinking his entire existence at the moment. "I'll go to bed if you go to bed. We can sleep together."
Zuko misses the smirk that spreads on their lips.
"I prefer to sleep in my own bed." His voice is unintentionally firm, his gaze locked on the ocean, as if he's not allowing himself anymore glimpses of Y/n.
He suddenly feels something warm against his hand. When he looks down to see what it is, he sees their hand on top of his. The tips of his ears turn a deep magenta.
"What are you doing?" He refuses to look at Y/n.
"Your hands are surprisingly cold for a firebender, Zuko." They say with a tilt of their head, "Want me to warm 'em up for you?"
Zuko nods, unable to respond, his throat feeling like a hundred butterflies are stuck in it.
Their fingers wrap around his, intertwining into a hold Zuko can only describe as the best thing he's ever felt in his entire life.
His heart pitter patters against his ribcage pathetically. He knew if his sister could see how he was acting right now, she'd never let him live it down. They could be in the afterlife and she still wouldn't be able to shut the hell up about it.
But she wasn't here, and it was just him, Y/n, and the comfortable silence they'd fallen into.
And maybe, just maybe, he did love something—or someone—more than he loved the beach.

A/N: Hi! Here I am, as promised. Not so long ago, I stumbled across a list of prompts, and this one was the one that caught my eye. I couldn't let it sit there, so here we are with this drabble. I hope you'll enjoy it. I forgot to mention that if everything goes according to the plans, I'll post every two weeks, exactly like I'm doing lately. 🖤 Let me know what you guys think. All errors are mine, of course.
It happened one evening, out of the blue.
They had just ended a hunt, not a particularly difficult one. They were tired, but not that tired. So, it seemed the right way to end the day while sitting in the library with a drink.
They all shared some stories, few smiles, and heartfelt laughs until it was time for bed. Sam was the first to say his goodnight, needing his beauty sleep before the morning run.
Y/N and Dean, instead, stayed back a bit longer, simply enjoying each other company, which was something relatively new for them.
It was just around two when they forced themselves to say goodnight before falling asleep, right there and then.
Y/N was still leaning against her chair, watching him get up, ready to wave at him like she had done a hundred times before.
Dean let his fingers linger a bit more on the rim of his glass, unsure, before closing the distance with two long strides. He leaned forward then, pressing a kiss on Y/N’s air. She stiffened at the unexpected gesture, feeling her breathing stop for a second.
“Goodnight,” he whispered while moving towards the corridor to his room.
Y/N stayed still on her chair, her hand anchored around her glass and her eyes glued to the door he had just walked over.
What had just happened? Dean wasn’t so affectionate with her, which she understood since they didn’t have much of a relationship. They were just roommates, basically, and she was okay with that. At least she knew he tolerated her.
This, though?
It was new, not that she minded. She didn’t mind at all. The sensation of his lips on her hair was nice; really nice. She smiled to herself until she realized.
There's just something off. Something he's not telling me. I have dreams he's cheating on me every night. He lies. He says he'll call me, says we can hang out, and yet he doesn't. He doesn't show up. I should've known from the beginning but im so stupid. He so obviously love bombed me and I fell for it. Now I barely even hear from him. Always on the game even when im at his house, and when I told him I felt ignored, he started being so distant.
I just don't know what to do. I thought we were good. But im afraid he just tells me what I want to hear to get what he wants. I wish I could just stop falling for emotionally unavailable losers who swear up and down they can give you the world and move mountains for you when they can't even call.
In all of my relationships they always get tired of me or there's always someone else. I'? so tired of this i just wish I knew the truth. Why am I getting the silent treatment for something you caused? Why am I never enough? Maybe I'm just not meant for love. Maybe it's not real. Maybe all the movies and books I consume have given me a false sense of reality. Why do people always love me only for a little while? Why can't I be the girl you change for? Why am I always the one watching from the sidelines?
I got an idea for a transformers one and prime crossover au. Just hear me out.
TFO Sentinel Prime not being killed by D-16 but arrested by Orion (now Optimus) for what he did. The war ended, both Optimus and Megatron leaving their now destroyed planet as the events of transformers prime happen. And all of the sudden, a certain traitor of a prisoner shows up, begging to be let on team prime for his redemption and begging for forgiveness, but non trust him enough. And all he wants to do is prove to them he changed for the good and learned his lesson from last time.
