What I read in June 2026

Infernal Devices and A Darkling Plain - Philip Reeve

Proof that the trope of “And then they settled down and got married” doesn't always work. I don't know if it's the fact it's a YA series and the transition to the new lead, or something about Reeve's writing style….But it really felt like every character became pretty unlikable at some point. Hester could have been tragic, but it never quite felt like it landed. I am always a sucker for an ending that comes full circle though, so that last line from Mr Shrike was great.

The Expanded Earth - Mikey Please

I borrowed this from my girlfriend and enjoyed it….”What if the Borrowers was directed by Ridley Scott” isn't something I knew I wanted. Wish it handed ended with cliffhangers on almost every front, but I am looking forward to book two.

The Last Contract of Isako - Fonda Lee

Complete impulse purchase. I'd heard of Fonda Lee, haven't read any of her other books yet…. Honestly the cover art made me think of the show “RWBY” for some reason, which I will always appreciate even if the story itself doesn't bear that out. That being said, it's a Cyberpunk noir, detective samurai story…It's cool as hell and Studio Trigger need to working on this immediately.

Perdido Street Station - China Mieville

Another author whose name I had heard but whose game I was unfamiliar with. This is some peak steampunky dark fantasy and would be best suited to an HBO adaptation. Really fun world building which I can't wait to explore more of, because of course the 800+ page book is part one of a series….Also, great monster design.

I bought The Cave Downwind of the Café by Mikey Please and Welsh Giants, Ghosts & Goblins by Claire Fayers.
