Oh no
Someone has perceived me better than I do myself again!
My husband asked me how my list of favourite pirates was cracking on and I laughed and was like 'what list? Two entries isn't a list'.
He just looked at me with the pity reserved for the spiritually blind. Now i've looked in the mirror, I realise that he saw something I didn't. My life can be split into pirate eras. Childhood, you got Muppets Treasure Island, Tim Curry. Teenage years, Isabella, Dragon Age 2. Young adult, Captain Rondo (I was mostly stoned and eating a lot of Lidl biscuits at the time), and now we have my 30s, with The Scar. I talk about pirates a lot. I buy pretty much every magazine I see about lost pirate ships/noteable pirate careers (did you know what Black Sam Bellamy captured AT LEAST 53 ships in a YEAR long career??). I don't like it when people put pirates in the same category as cowboys (look, cowboys were a symbol of colonialism and white men's vision of the natural world being outside of themselves, whilst pirates often had stories of emancipation, justice and ultimately represent freedom from government control).
I feel like I've had a completely pointless awakening to the inner workings of my soul. What the fuck am I supposed to do with this information.
All I can do is what my heart tells me to do.
Advocate for more pirate based media.
I doubt there is anyone out there. I doubt anyone is reading this, but if you are...
Can you do something piratey please. If you draw or write or sing or just riff on shit, can you do something with pirates. Please.
