assorted WoT textpost, the 3th installment
well, it's been a while since my last rewotch so these are kinda hit-or-miss
I’m sure this is common knowledge but I’d like to bring attention to the absolute SAPPHIC SMORGASBOARD that is the beautiful and underrated fantasy show ‘Wheel of Time’!
It’s a great show for many reasons - although s1 is actually the weakest imo, but the show gets better in s2 and then better AGAIN in s3 - as it has sickass fantasy world building, insanely gorgeous visuals, interesting characters and arcs, deep lore, excellent fight choreography, and solid queer and poly rep. But the aspect I want to talk about here is the dazzling array of sapphic pin ups this show so generously provides. Let’s explore:
Moiraine - the most obvious one!!! Moiraine is a main character and is a truly fascinating and morally ambiguous one. She is also MOTHERRR (I mean, she’s played by Rosamund Pike, soooo) and constantly serves stoic brooding quiet power that erupts into breathtaking badassery (she’s a very talented magic user). Also, canonically queer yay!!!
Lanfear - hhhhnnnnggghhhhh ok sorry I’ll try to pull it together. If you support women’s wrongs and if you like insanely hot goth older dommes in gorgeous high fashion looks that say ‘I am going to put my foot through your chest and you are going to thank me’, you will enjoy Lanfear. If you’re not into that I am baffled, but hey you do you. Sadly she’s not in s1 but she’s worth the wait I promise.
Alanna - sadly she has limited screen time, as she’s more of a recurring character than a main one, but she’s still onscreen regularly enough that if you’re as in love with her as me, you’re pretty well fed. She’s a warrior who is lethal in battle, she struts around in gorgeous green outfits making sarcastic comments, and she’s a poly QUEEN with two hot husbands whipped for her (and each other). What more could you want???
Liandrin - I’m not actually sure that I’m attracted to Liandrin per se but she’s absolutely one of the best and most interesting characters on the show. A true survivor, ruthless yet fragile, and again: a badass magic warrior. Plus in s3 she dresses like lady gaga and rips out a paedo’s heart onscreen. Iconic.
Min - serving nonbinary swag all day every day AND they’re funny to boot! Ok the show does use she/her pronouns for Min, but the androgynous drip and enby vibes are delightful nonetheless. Min is also just… really likeable? And I really enjoy their on-off ‘we probably fuck sometimes but we’re besties but mostly we are just both really lgbt’ bond with the show’s resident bi disaster boy. Queer rep at its most authentic lmao
Egwene - my personal taste runs more to older women who seem like they’d top me tbh BUT Egwene is lovely and undergoes a fantastic character arc. She goes from sheltered girl next door love interest to a self assured woman who can and will take any and all matters into her own hands. Plus she gets a very cute character development bob in s3. PLUS as an Australian it delights me to see a beautiful Aboriginal woman playing a main character in an international prestige show FUCK YESSSSS
Nynaeve - again, not really my type, but a wonderful character with some very cool moments in the show. If you’re into caring and smart Mum Friends who excel in their profession and always take things seriously and do their best (who also have a spine of steel and will punch god for their loved ones) then Nynaeve is your dream girl. You’ll have to fight a crazy skilled Alternate Universe Aragorn for her though so good luck with that.
Siuan - ok I know I said Moiraine is MOTHER but Siuan is actually Mother, as in the high priestess of the magic cult that all the cult members have mommy issues about. She’s tired and overworked and stressed af but still fabulous, she speaks in fishing metaphors the way dads in American movies talk in baseball speak, and she’s GAY. I love her.
Aviendha - responsible for some of the best fight scenes in the show!!! Aviendha is Aiel, a desert warrior people, and in s2/3 this show generously graces us with a whole cast of hot and ultra competent Aiel women who kick ass. Aviendha also happens to be a fun character who likes to keep our main chosen one humble, and also canonically queer. ALL WE DO IS WIN WIN WIN NO MATTER WHAT-
Elaida - sadly only shows up in s3 which is a big shame cause she’s played by THE Shohreh Aghdashloo. If you’re familiar with Shohreh you know she has the throatiest, sexiest, most mesmerising voice on the planet. Add to that the fact that she’s incredibly beautiful and they put her in some stunning tailored gowns. And THEN add to that the fact that Elaida is a super intriguing character. And you’ll see why I put her on this list even though she’s not in s1/2. SHE DESERVES IT.
I can only do 10 gifs :( but honorary mentions to Elayne and Faile and honestly pretty much every other woman to cross the screen. I spent so much of this show with my mouth open just thinking about how fucking gay I am. What a gift.
Thank you Wheel Of Time, it’s a crime you got cancelled but I’m very grateful for the three seasons we got ❤️
The Wheel of Time 3.03 (2025)
I love Moiraine’s little forehead gem and the little bits of gold on her ears, that Nynaeve still wears her Two Rivers Wisdom belt, I love that Siuan Sanche is covered in tattoos, I love how fiercely Egwene holds on to her single long braid, compared to Liandrin’s many little braids, I love Min’s side-shaved haircut, I love that Alanna wears a multitude of jewelry while still being a dangerous warrior in her own right, the few women we’ve seen wearing a fantasy hijab, and how Bain and Chiad at first glance look like they’re dressed just like Aviendha but on a second look there’s a lot of differences. I love that the costume design gives all of these women such a sense of culture. Yes, they’ve all come together for one reason or another, but they are not from the same place and they do not come from the same background and you can tell that immediately just by looking at them.
