Minho noticed patterns.

It was kind of his thing.

You didn’t survive the Maze without learning how to read what people missed—the pause before a sprint, the shift in weight that meant someone was lying, the silence that said more than words ever could.

So when Newt stopped standing beside Minho and started standing just behind Alby, Minho noticed.

Not dramatically.

Not all at once.

It was in the way Newt angled his body when Alby spoke, like he was bracing with him instead of for him. In the way Alby’s hand would reach out without looking—never grabbing, never pulling—just checking that Newt was there.

And Newt always was.

Minho watched it happen from the edge of the Glade, arms crossed, pretending he wasn’t cataloging every detail like a Runner mapping turns. He told himself it didn’t matter. That it was just proximity. Leadership. Convenience.

But convenience didn’t look like that.

Convenience didn’t soften Alby’s shoulders when Newt spoke quietly into his ear.

Convenience didn’t make Newt smile like the world had narrowed down to one person.

Minho felt it then—a dull, familiar ache.

So that’s it, he thought. Not angry. Just… resigned.

Later, when Minho came back from a run, dust still clinging to his boots, he found them sitting on the stone wall together. Not touching—not really—but close enough that the space between them felt intentional.

Alby was talking. Newt was listening.

Really listening.

Minho slowed without meaning to.

Alby laughed—soft, brief. 

Minho was surprised by it. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d heard that sound.

Newt said something low in response. Alby leaned closer.

Minho looked away.

That night, Minho sat sharpening his blades while the Glade settled into sleep. Newt passed by on his way to the Homestead and paused.

“Good run?” Newt asked.

“Same as always,” Minho replied. He hesitated, then added, casual as he could manage, “You sticking close to Alby lately?”

Newt stiffened—just a fraction. Then he relaxed.

“Someone has to,” he said. “He carries a lot.”

Minho nodded. “Yeah. He does.”

What Newt didn’t say—and what Minho didn’t ask—hung there between them.

Minho watched Newt limp away, watched him stop at Alby’s door without thinking, like it was muscle memory already.

That was when Minho understood.

This wasn’t about being chosen.

This was about gravity.

Alby anchored Newt.

And Minho—who ran ahead, who mapped exits, who survived by moving fast—wasn’t meant to stand in the middle of that.

Minho lay awake that night, staring up at the ivy as it shifted in the dark.

He kept thinking about hands.

Newt’s, mostly. The way they moved when he talked—open, expressive, never guarded. The way they used to clap Minho on the shoulder after a run, solid and warm and grounding. The way Minho had learned, slowly and painfully, not to look for them anymore.

He wanted it.

The closeness.

The weight of Newt leaning into him.

The easy contact that came so naturally with everyone else.

Minho craved it in the quiet moments—the kind of want that settled low in his chest and stayed there, aching and patient. The kind that made his fingers curl against his palm like they were remembering something they weren’t allowed to reach for anymore.

He watched Newt with Alby now and understood why.

How Alby’s presence steadied him. How Newt didn’t have to ask for permission to be held there—how it was already given, already safe. How Newt touched Alby like he wasn’t afraid of needing him.

Minho swallowed hard.

He could have done it, he thought. Could have let his hand linger one second longer. Could have leaned in, brushed shoulders, claimed space that wasn’t offered. But he wouldn’t.

Because wanting Newt wasn’t the same as being entitled to him.

Minho rolled onto his side, pressing his arm against his chest like it might quiet the ache. He imagined, just once, what it would feel like if Newt chose him the way he chose Alby—if that warmth belonged to him instead.

The thought hurt enough that he exhaled sharply and let it go.

If Newt was alive because of Alby—if that bond was the thing that kept him tethered to the world— then Minho would never be the one to disrupt it.

He would take the long runs.

He would crack jokes to ease tension.

He would make space on purpose.

He would learn how to want something without reaching for it.

Because loving Newt meant stepping back even when every instinct screamed for him to step closer.

It's crazy how much chemistry all the TMR characters have with each other. I can see almost ANY ship happening. I'm serious. Give me a ship that is not adult x child or Chuck (I don't ship him because he's like 12 and everyone else is 16-18) and I can justify it. I love them ALL. Newtmas? Hell yeah. Thominho? I ship it so hard. Nalby? needs to be more popular. Minally or Thomally? Silly, I love it. Minalby? WHY have I seen nobody talking about this one. And the lesbians too. Do NOT try to tell me that Sonyarriet isn't canon. My favorite lesbian ship is Brenderesa. Yes I know it would never realistically happen, but it's FUN, so fuck you. And if we have to be straight, I could see Brenda and Minho, Brenda and Frypan, or Alby and Teresa. I just prefer gays because I find it more fun. But almost anything is possible, like I said.

Just put them all in a giant polycule at this point. Thominewtalblly Sonbrenarrietesa.

random maze runner what if….what if Minho got stung instead of Alby?

Would Alby be able to find his way back? Would they just die in the maze?

If Alby made it almost back dragging Minho and Thomas ran into the maze with them, would they survive the night?

Alby probably wouldn’t bolt like Minho did, he’s not the type.

I bet he’d help Thomas tie Minho up in the vines.

If they did survive, how would other events change?

Alby is more of a rule follower, I don’t think he’d recommend Thomas for running immediately like Minho did because he broke the Number One Rule.

Probably a harsher sentence in the Slammer and then he gets to be a runner, since they need a new one and Alby probably also saw how Thomas is a natural, but with Minho down who trains him?

Alby and Thomas would become better friends (thalby?? I kinda like Nalby as an established relationship in the Glade maybe…) and he’d likely escape the Maze. Minho might die in the first book in Alby’s place, but I don’t know if he’s the type to throw himself at Grievers like that.

Alternatively, they might actually make it back in time. Alby strikes me as a physically strong person. Maybe he’s able to carry Minho back in the nick of time. Or he throws Minho through the doors just as they close and dies in the maze by himself.

Ship-wise, some fun possibilities include Thominho, Minalby, Thalby, Nalby, and Minewt.

I almost wanna write an AU of this now….has this been done before?

Hi Maze Runners…Im back with my favorite ships in the franchise my sweet sweet homos.

Everyday I think of new Minalby (miby…) things but my ass doesn’t wanna draw or write more for my fic that I still need to write for hehehe

Unironically ranting about Minalby cause its so underrated in the vast fandom, anyway! These are some book scenes that established them the most (there is also one from the first Maze Runner book where they are introduced together like when thomas first wakes up and they are describing a few characters) + the first is from the first book and the rest are fever code and Honorable mention to the Fever code moment where Alby asks immediately where Minho is and says that Minho had said something to him (Minho yaps to Alby is canon)
