A great reads for kids grades 5 & up (and for any adults *cough* me *cough* who liked shows like Eerie Indiana or So Weird growing up).

Shusterman does a fantastic job creating that creepy, speculative environment that draws young people in. Uncanny is truly the most descriptive way to put it.

Some of the stories readers will have speculated about themselves, and yet others are so far out there that they make you laugh. In particular, the last story is a heartbreaking story with a point-of-view I think we've all thought about at one point or another. And yet another has me put off a particular soup for the foreseeable future.

Any library with fans of Goosebumps by R. L. Stine, or The Many Hauntings of the Manning Family by Lorien Lawrence will want to add this to the shelves.

Man, this has the perfect vibe that makes autumn really enjoyable. I'm reading this in September and I think it will read just as well any time of year but I have to say that its got a vibe that is like watching Are You Afraid of the Dark? with your sibling with some hot cocoa after school when its just getting dark.

The nolstagia vibes really got me with this one.

There are some dark subjects mentioned, like gun violence, allegories for drug addiction, attempted murder, etc., but they are approached from a very age appropriate perspective. I'd say the least age appropriate story here was the first one with the dolphin campaigning to be president, and that only because there were no kids for the readers to relate to and politics can be a boring topics for young readers.

I love a good short story collection, especially when it mixes tones and genres. Shusterman’s imagination is always so inventive, so I was curious to see what kind of bizarre corners of reality he’d twist open here.

This is a collection brimming with invention. Some stories lean sci-fi, some lean fantasy, some are just a neat little one-gag flash — but they’re all distinct and vivid. I was ready for variety, and I definitely got it.

It surprised me by…

Even the stories that didn’t quite land for me were still engaging. Usually in a collection, the misses feel like filler — but here, they felt like Shusterman just playing with a different flavour, one that wasn’t always to my taste but still had something memorable. That’s rare.
