Idk if someone else has thought of this before, but hear me out on this new worldbuilding headcanon for Minecraft. Phantoms pose the same ecological role as IRL vultures. That being, they eat dead bodies. The reason a lot of them swarm (and even attack) the player when they haven't gotten sleep is because they sense lack of energy (which, for a lot of animals means death is nearby) and assume the player is either dead or dying.
Bloodcraft: Phantoms
People who have died in Overworld from insomnia or pure exhaustion have a chance at returning as a Phantom. Drawn to the biological distress caused from denying oneself rest, or simply being unable to obtain it, they will seek out those who push the limits and prey on their fading health. Drawing from discomfort, lack of strength, or fear. It is unclear if they are aware of their now malicious nature.
They can also manifest through hallucinations, night terrors, or sleep paralysis and have even been known to crouch on a person's chest; making it feel as if you can't breathe. It will take more than a physical weapon to get rid of them. Practicing better self care and using available treatments to discourage their visits, will help in banishing them and keeping them away.

I like phantoms. They're majestic and mysterious, like stingrays swimming in the night sky. They're a little bit scary when they're swooping down to kill you, but all in all very cool creatures. 10/10 would recommend.

Phantom Race
Still working on my MC DnD crossover Campaign, and like- IT’S SO MUCH FUNN
I also really love phantoms (unpopular opinion I know) so I wanted to do them first with this kinda race I’ve got going. Of course i’m going to go and spruce it up as well as add more to it, but this was what I wanted to get down.
If anyone has any questions or are just interested in the World I’m currently building up for this, feel free to ask! I’ve got a lot of lore and story ready for a lot of the Mobs, and I even have a bunch of worldbuilding done!
end lore things i’ve been thinking about
-phantoms have the same green eyes that endermen did before their eye color was changed to purple, and like endermen, their eyes remain visible when affected by invisibility (I think)
-phantoms were previously able to spawn in the End
-very Interesting that elytra can only be repaired with phantom membranes, even though those are only obtainable in the overworld now - implies some other native organic material with which elytra were originally crafted (giant End beetles??? hell YEAH I’m here for that!!)
-it would make sense for the End to be populated with more flying creatures in general. like teleportation, it’s a good adaptation for traversing the floating islands, and it would give the additional bonus of roosting on the cliffsides or undersides of islands - niches yet unfilled.
-flying could connect to shulker bullets’ levitation ability... very interesting (I like the idea of an End plant that causes levitation, too)
-this would also fit nicely with all the floating ships that were probably a central form of transportation between islands
-maybe chorus adapted to teleport you when you eat it in the hopes of spreading its seeds further
-endermen and chorus could have some kind of symbiotic relationship, with the chorus providing the endermen with abundant food, and the endermen roaming far and wide to disperse new chorus seeds (the reason no discarded seeds grow in other dimensions is the lack of end stone to take root in)
-the End’s people, who built the cities, could have been deeply in tune with nature, as evidenced by the spiraling designs of their buildings echoing the growth patterns of chorus trees
-What Happened To The Other Dragons??

anyway yes he acts pretty much exactly as you’d expect him to? at night he gets super antsy and semi violent unless youre asleep. the real question is: can he fly with his arm wings?
