Lloyd set his chin on his arms, watching Ninjago City from behind the railing of The Destiny’s Bounty. It was the most beautiful early in the morning, with the sun rising behind it. The sky filled with a creamy sorbet color, a mixture of pink and orange and purple and green, each shade blending smoothly with the next. The skyscrapers cut across the pastel palette, still reflecting the silvery night in the West.

He twirled a finger in a strand of his hair, watching as the shadows receded from the deck, pushed away by the approaching sunlight. Lloyd hadn’t seen his dad in over a month. Before he’d found the ninja, his father used to send shadows, whispering secret messages to him while he was alone at Darkley’s. But after he’d finally gotten to meet his father, his dad was gone again, disappearing back to wherever he’d been before.

Only this time, he didn’t send any more shadows.

“Hey buddy,” Kai said softly, crossing the deck to join him. He smoothed out the sash around his waist. “You’re up early.”

“Yeah,” mumbled Lloyd, resting his cheek against his elbow.

“Still not sleeping well?”

Lloyd shook his head. Whenever he closed his eyes, he saw people leaving him. His dad, his mom, whoever she was, the few friends he’d thought he had at Darkley’s. The ninja said they wouldn’t abandon him, but that was all anyone had ever done.

And I don't want to be alone anymore.

Tousling his hair, Kai stared out at the city next to him. “I have a feeling you'll see your father again soon.”

Lloyd nodded, turning his eyes down to the waves that lapped against the boat’s hull. “I know, but that's what I'm afraid of.”

Because next time… next time I’m going to have to fight him.
