Is it bad to have been promoting different portfolios to ADs over time? What I show on my website always changes significantly between promos. I don't think it's a clear, linear, "This artist is becoming better" progression either. I feel like i'm sort of rotating between 3 or 4 styles that just haven't really gelled yet. But in the process may be torpedo-ing my image.
Art Directors are like very forgiving elephants: We remember, but we also don’t hold it against you. I hire a lot of artists that I’ve seen develop over a few years. I don’t hold their past against them…but I also can’t hire then until I see that their portfolio is a solid body of consistent work. It’s like a pro sports team having minor league teams to farm talent.
As for linear progression…usually it only looks linear in hindsight. Right now you’re just in the messy developmental stage. Trying a bunch of stuff on before you start to synthesize it into one looks. Have you read the blog post on how to figure out your style? it might help…
