I watched ASiP again the other day for the 10 year anniversary and stumbled upon this. Please scroll past if this has been discussed before and you are getting bored.
Two trips in the back of a car. John is sitting on the viewer’s left, the other person on the right.
Both his opposites are handsome, dark-haired, mysterious.
John is very interested in both of them.
However, this is where the parallels end, because:
Sherlock is lively, talkative, engaging. He dazzles John with his deductions. Anthea on the other hand is distant, monosyllabic, clearly not interested in John at all and makes her disinterest very clear.
Sherlock wants John’s praise and attention. Anthea does not want anything John has to offer.
Sherlock dares to expose himself even at this early point of their acquaintance: By admitting that people usually tell him to piss off = that they dislike him and his behaviour. Probably for the first time in his life he meets someone who finds his skills “amazing” and “quite extraordinary”. Nothing of this where Anthea is concerned.
Sherlock has introduced himself to John in the lab and offered John to call him by his first name the moment they meet in Baker Street. Anthea only gives a false name.
Sherlock invites an enthusiastic John to come with him, so he is in the cab of his own free will. With Anthea, however, John only gets into the car because he feels threatened by Big Brother Mycroft.
In a way this is John’s romantic disposition in a nutshell. He is interested in men and women but his interest in Sherlock goes far deeper and is far more emotional whereas his flirting with Anthea remains superficial and unsatisfied. He is fascinated by Sherlock while almost automatically switching to flirting mode when meeting a woman he finds reasonably attractive.
Both scenes set a precedent for what is going to happen at least until the end of S2. And even with Mary, John is never as fascinated and entertained and emotionally fulfilled as with Sherlock.
