A little bit of perspective.

People are upset with the amount of cutting from the Odyssey film. I honestly enjoyed the film. I’ve seen it twice in theatres which is saying something since I haven’t been to the theatre in years.

The Odyssey book is quite long, roughly 400-600 pages depending on the translation. Depending on the reader, it would take a person 7-9 hours to read it cover to cover in one sitting. That’s a long book. Which means if it was truthfully adapted to film, it would be perhaps 6 hours long or longer. No one will sit through a movie of that length in the theatre. You can say that the extended version of the Lord of the Rings trilogy is longer (which it is at about 11 hours), but the amount of people willing to sit through that in theatres is small. You have to admit that.

The use of the Viking longship was done for practical reasons. It was a wooden, seaworthy vessel that would allow for actors and crew to be aboard while filming and sailing. The two sailing vessels do look similar. Sure they could’ve built a seaworthy penteconter replica, but it was likely easier and cheaper to use what was already available.

But there will always be unhappy people when literary works are adapted to film. Even literary works that have been translated 60 different times since 1615. Which can count as 60 different adaptations of the original text.

Edit: The Iliad and The Odyssey began as oral traditions. To quote an article I read today, I felt this bit was pretty important to remember:

“Any way you try to present The Iliad or Odyssey in book form, you mislead people. You put one text at the top of the page, implying that that’s the real version,” Dué says. “So we were trying to think, how could we present the text in a way that doesn’t give that impression of there being the one true text?”

always funny to remember darth vader is anakin skywalker. the adrenaline junkie chucklefuck who used to dive head first out of speeders and built a pod racer in his yard when he was like six is now upper-middle management for the evil empire. half of his appearances in the original trilogy are Meetings. vader spends like 80% of his time dealing with bureaucratic bullshit. status updates. team meetings. holo-Zooms. budget rundowns. anakin betrayed the jedi and caused the fall of the republic and his punishment is being CC'd on every email forever. and you know what. he would hate that. the punishment fits the criminal

I HC that Sidious put him in upper management specifically to make that hate flow. He looked at Jedi Anakin and thought to himself: what does this guy like? Jumping out of moving vehicles at 30,000 feet? Well, we won’t be doing *gestures at all of Anakin* that. Put this guy in an office.

The voice actor of Spybot (kind of) confirmed that Maul built Spybot

So that headcanon just became canon.

David W. Collins (whose also the sound designer and responsible for the lightsaber scream) said in an interview that he had the idea that Maul built Spybot and when he pitched it to Brad Rau (the head writer for MSL), they neither confirmed nor denied it, just asked David what he thought felt right.

And he thinks Maul created him and that it says a lot about Maul's character that he allowed this droid to be so playful and carefree. That through Spybot he shows a side he can't be himself 😭

And that he truly is only out for himself.

At the end of the day, Maul’s #1 priority is himself. At his core, he doesn’t care about Devon or her future. He only cares about how he can use her to get revenge on those who’ve wronged him. He doesn’t care if she lives or dies in the process.

He is a great character because he does have complicated elements to him. Yes, he was manipulated and he was twisted by Sidious. He was very much a victim. But he’s doing the same to Devon.
