In the キャラ設定.txt file of Phantasmagoria of Flower View, the name order is different depending on character.

Reimu, Marisa, Sakuya, Youmu, Tewi, Aya, Yuuka and Komachi have their forename written last.

Reisen, Lyrica, Merlin, Lunasa, Mystia and Medicine have their forename written first.

Eiki doesn’t even have her name romanized. It only appears with Japanese symbols.

Left side pictures (ver0.01a files), right side pictures (ver0.02a files).

Both omake.txt and readme.txt from ver0.01a of Phantasmagoria of Flower View had 2005/05/04 date written at the top. However, the omake.txt of ver0.02a still said 2005/05/04, but the readme.txt was changed to 2005/06/12.

Interestingly, if you scroll to the very bottom of the readme.txt from ver0.02a, you will see that it’s mentioned there that both versions were released on  2005/05/04, but if you check the download page from ZUN’s website, there are totally different dates for ver0.02a release.

The link is www16.big.or.jp/~zun/html/th09dl.html. Here it mentions 2005/06/10 as the release date of ver0.02a, but it seems that the download link was updated on 2005/06/11 too.

What happens when you mess up with the “forbidden” option in the custom.exe of Phantasmagoria of Flower View.

In the full version of Phantasmagoria of Flower View, you can find full portraits of all characters, but they are blue.

Coloured portraits are just like this, there is no actual full portrait to be entirely coloured.

If you are referring to the full portraits which appear on the touhou wiki, I am sorry to inform everybody that those are just some edits made by somebody. Those full coloured portraits cannot be found in the actual files of the game. 

I initially thought too that they were image rips, but after I learnt how to extract the files myself, I found out that they’re not there.

Some .mid files from Phantasmagoria of Flower View end before the bar reaches the end of the song. Mystia’s theme does not have any additional notes after the song finishes but Marisa’s theme has. Also, one of the pre-battle themes has towards the end of the track some percussion. You can’t hear these normally in game, you have to extract and listen to the .mid files.

The title screen and title bar say 1.00, but the readme.txt says 1.00a.

Strange numbering of “volumes”

I just recently noticed a strange numbering of the games while looking through the txt files that are in the folders. Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is called “vol.1″, but Perfect Cherry Blossom is called “vol.3″.

I was a bit confused at first, because to my knowledge, there were no games released between EoSD and PCB. But it seems that the trial versions of Perfect Cherry Blossom were called differently. PCB trials 0.01~0.04 were called “vol.2″ and the 0.05~0.11 ones were called “vol.2.1″.

Going further, I found that Imperishable Night trial versions were called “vol.3″ like Perfect Cherry Blossom full version.

The full version of Imperishable Night is named “vol.4″.

Phantasmagoria of Flower View trial version is called “vol.5″

And Phantasmagoria of Flower View Full version is called “vol.6″.

Shoot the Bullet is called “vol.7″

And Immaterial and Missing Power full version is called “vol.5″ like Phantasmagoria of Flower View trial version. There is no such file in IaMP trial. 

After StB, there are no more volume numberings.

All PoFV tracks were supposed to have MIDI versions

The trial version of Phantasmagoria of Flower View has MIDI soundtrack. But these files are available even in the full version. By renaming thbgm.dat to something else and deleting the .cfg file, you can listen to the MIDI songs in the full version. However, only the songs that were in the trial have MIDIs in the full. 

If you extract the files from the full version, you will find the MIDIs. You can see that there are only 7 tracks available to listen to. 

The musiccmt.txt file contains the music commentaries of the tracks and their corresponding .mid files. In the trial version, you will find the commentaries only for the 7 tracks. But in the full version, you can find the commentaries and the corresponding .mid files for all tracks.

Even though ZUN didn’t include them all in the full version, you can see what the files would have been named.

This is the proof that, at some point, all tracks were supposed to have a .mid version as well.

It’s interesting that some of them have th07 and th08 in their names. Probably they would have been the same versions from Perfect Cherry Blossom and Imperishable Night, although 東方妖々夢　～ Ancient Temple is th07_10.mid in Perfect Cherry Blossom (it doesn’t have the additional _b in its name).
