A 🦷 (tooth)! Did you know that you can identify a siren’s type by their teeth?

Surge sirens are known for all of their teeth being pointed and sharp (and often serrated!), and they usually have more than one layer of teeth! Just like the sharks they seem so like, they can lose a few of their teeth quite often, but new ones grow in extremely fast!

Mist sirens, similar to Surge sirens, have the majority of their teeth being sharp: however, their front four teeth are identically shaped to humans’, while their eye teeth (canines) are their largest, longest fangs, and the rest of their molars are like miniature versions of these fangs. Very similar to a cat’s fangs! (Mist and Surge sirens are both carnivorous!)

Forest siren teeth are nearly identical to a humans’, but due to their herbivorous diet, their teeth tend to be a lot more dull and flat.

Light sirens... well. Don’t have teeth. They don’t have mouths as we know them, they have beaks! Like most cephalopods!

It’s rather unusual that Celestine’s fangs don’t match any of these four, huh? They’re almost like a mixture of Forest, Mist, and Surge siren teeth... Celestine’s teeth are mostly identical to a humans, but her eye teeth and first molars are replaced by slightly serrated fangs! They aren’t much longer than the rest of her teeth, but they sure are sharp!!

You’re legitimately sending the writer obsessed with sirens... the emoji for siren. Amazing.

Celia is the main Mist siren character that the reader gets to meet in the Anchored Souls series! Lia only really speaks in one or two words, but their singing is powerfully hypnotic and can lure in the most stubborn of sailors. They actually use their voice to attempt to lure in Phoenix to an untimely death--we’re lucky Celestine, as another siren, is immune, and is able to snap her out of it!

Mist; Ascendant of Fogs, Songs and Shipwrecks

Just the slightest bit pretentious.

The most common variety of siren, Mist sirens are the main type attributed to mythology and trouble-making in the mariner’s world. The majority of folk only know of this kind, the origin of the misconception that all sirens have a luring song. Mist sirens perhaps are not the most intelligent, nicknamed ‘Foggies’ partially for this reason, and are often met with significant contempt from the other sirens due to difficulty of communication and interaction.

Though this may be true, beware their song--it carries enough magic to force any targeted being, aside from other sirens, towards its source, many believe to be eaten. Mist sirens often live in amidst rocky coves, summoning fog to shroud the danger as they lure in entire ships to wreck.

MAIN ABILITIES:

Fog manipulation/creation

Minor glamour/self-transformation magic

GENERAL TEMPERAMENT: Hostile upon approach, but will flee if outmatched.

SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR: Often work in small pods with a single leader, rarely solitary. Common bickering. Sometimes found working together with Surge sirens.

HABITAT: Rocky coves or reefs where fog is common and shallow waters are dangerous to ships.

DIET: Carnivorous;

Fish/marine creatures

Humans

Occasional (other) land creatures

Occasional scavenging

MISCELLANEOUS INFO:

The most notable collector of shiny and valuable objects.

The most animalistic of the sirens in intelligence and behaviour. Their focus is on survival and personal decoration.

These sirens tend to spend the most time outside of water, resting on rocks and beaches, and often in sea caves.

Commonly encountered, but the easiest to escape. “Easiest” is rather subjective when dealing with deadly, people-eating sirens, however.

Story teller Saturday! How is history recorded in your WIP? How is it passed down and studied? What biases have cropped up and warped the view of the past?

It’s no longer Storyteller Saturday, so I won’t be sending out any new asks in return for ones I receive because I have a whole lot to get through! Thank you all so much for the wonderful questions~

Oooohhhhh a worldbuilding ask!! Also @sidhewrites​, it appears you sent me three asks in total–I’m not complaining in the least, but I think one of them is a repeat? So I’ll be answering this one instead of the other history one!

One Siren’s Soul takes place on an alternate Earth during the early 1700s—because of that, most of human culture remains the same as it did historically, but what I can talk about here, is siren culture!

The Forest sirens are known as the historians of the sea: because of the massive libraries and the importance of education and learning in their havens, some have taken it upon themselves to act as the guardians of their culture’s history, and the protectors of stories and myths and traditions. They’re amazing record-keepers, and almost always have been, keeping notes and logs and records of events and important figures and rules and names, the like! Because of their incredibly powerful protection and preservation magic, most of these records have survived for thousands of years, although many have been lost to havens being destroyed by human siren hunters.

And despite all that wonderful fact-checking and record-keeping, biases are still incredibly prominent in the original writings of those records, and the interpretations of them. Most commonly the warping of history is due to historians attempting to retain their reputation, or to defend their own theories. In fact, one of the biggest current debates among the Forest siren historian population is about the theory of a Lost Ascendant. No one can find any absolutely definitive proof that a fifth Ascendant existed, but the existence of a fifth Ascendant Artifact seems to suggest it…

Surge sirens, on the other hand, are far less likely to know how (or care enough) to keep physical records. They’re more of a nomadic race, anyways, always traveling with relatively few locations to keep any sort of physical record aside from the Forest havens. They have a very strong oral culture for passing down knowledge and history, their stories often originally based on fact and around actual historical events, and though the tales may have warped quite a bit from the original, they still sustain the original core lesson or moral. 

Mist sirens are more or less the same as the Surge sirens, which makes sense, considering the two siren types are often found working together. And no one has any idea about how Light sirens work! (Except for me. I do~ c;)

(Siren history is a major plot-point of book two, so I have a lot of info on it!!)

Mist sirens have a love of shiny things and of decorating themselves with said shiny things. They’re not the smartest of creatures, but make no mistake--they can and will kill you.

Phoenix finds this out when she tries to get her tea kettle back.

A new character of mine, Cecily, is a vampire but she's blind. She's kinda like Daredevil by the way she sees.

I’ve watched a bit of the TV series Daredevil, but only a tiny bit of the first of it. ^^ Enough to know what you’re talking about, though! This is really cool~

ALSO, sorry to nerd out about this but!! I have a character named Celia, and I know Cecily has the same origin name? And the meaning of that is “blind or dim-sighted” so I SEE YOUR CLEVER NAME SYMBOLISM AND I ENJOY.

Actually you know what, let’s give a fact about Celia. Celia is the real name of the siren I gave the nickname “Kettle” to! They stole a tea kettle from Phoenix and appear at the end of the book wearing it on their head. The reason I chose that name is because they’re a Mist siren, and one of their main abilities is manipulating the mist around them to make them difficult to see! So Celia makes other people blind or dim-sighted~

Storyteller Saturday! Which music genre do your characters enjoy listening to the most? To sing? If they enjoy singing, do they think it's good? Would they be willing to perform in front of a crowd? Their closest friends? Or would they perfer to only do it for themselves? Do any of your characters write music? Or have considered it? What about playing an instrument?

In their time period, only a few of them actually have access to listening to music. Colin loves playing and learning new fiddle tunes and other violin folk music! Captain Io enjoys your classical music of the era, and most of my sailors also enjoy singing sea shanties and such.

Colin and Captain Xuàn are the only ones of my characters that really play instruments notably well. Colin plays the fiddle, and Xuàn plays the sáo. Colin performs for the Diluculo’s crew all the time, and a lot of his tunes are improvised or ones he wrote! (He can’t actually write/read music, though. His dyslexia affects his ability to read sheet music, so he plays mostly by ear!) Xuàn plays her sáo mostly for herself, with a focus on songs from her childhood and more traditional tunes. She often makes up her own based on what she knows, and really only performs for herself or her closest friends.

Isabel also plays the pandero but she’s still in the early stages of learning it. And Dione technically writes song lyrics through her poetry! She also used to sing beautifully, but uh. That’s... that’s a bit difficult when you don’t have a voice... (She sometimes does with her sign language, though~)

That’s not including the Mist sirens’ songs, of course. ^^

So yeah! Plenty of music in OSS, but most of it doesn’t show up until the second book, really. Thank you for the ask!

happy saturday, quill! do instruments or music play a role in your story? i believe colin has one, but if not, does any kind of art make an appearance?

Instruments don’t make as much of an appearance in the first book, no. Colin has a fiddle but it doesn’t pop up until the very end of the first book, but instruments will be appearing more in the second book especially!

And most of the music is from the Mist sirens’ songs, or sea shanties! I want to integrate shanties more in the second draft… I’m also planning for Dione to write a poem/song, but I… haven’t done that yet so. Later sometime. ^^’

Mist siren songs sound different to everyone who hears them, matching the language of the listener—at least, that’s what the magic it carries convinces your mind. The lyrics promise whatever you want to know, but the hypnotizing effect overlaying it all is truly what draws you in. If you do manage to get away, their song has a memory erasure effect, preventing you from recalling just what put you in that daze in the first place! It’s a protective measure so humans don’t know where to seek them out to kill them. ouo It doesn’t work all the time, though. Especially if someone’s been exposed to concentrated magic beforehand.

And Dione writes poetry! Like I said, there’s one main poem of hers that makes and appearance. As for other art, there’s an important ship model at one point. And Isabel does cross-stitching! George also sketches flowers he finds and presses~

Most of the art importance is in the second book!
