The father of 3yr old Zephyr provides us with a glimpse of what parenthood is like as he is a white man born in Manhattan with a biracial(white/black ghanaian) son. He talks about ability to share many experiences that go along with being human no matter the color such as being angry when your parents tell you no more tv and go to bed, missing your grandmother and feeling left out on the playground. He mentions those examples because in all of those situations the father can guide him and help him cope using his own personal memories , or simply put he’s been in his shoes. But the writer also expresses that there are some experiences that he and his beloved Zephyr will not share. Writer states (regarding to the talk black parents give their sons) “ I was shocked and saddened that anyone needed to hear this warning. This is not a lecture I ever received from my father. There was never a need It was always assumed that if I ever came into contact with police, both parties would act respectfully and appropriately. My parents weren’t worried about discrimination.
