ML is pretty straightforward about how perfection is an impossible standard to uphold. That anyone - including the (super)heroes - can and will make mistakes or be in the wrong.
What matters is if you take accountability for your mistakes and how you try to fix the situation.
And Marinette does that. She will mess up. Her imagination is a double-edged sword: when focus on a mission, it makes her incredibly resourceful and allows her to think out of the box to solve problems, but when insecurity and anxiety meddle in, her imagination can lead her into a spiral mode where she is overthinking and imagining things that are inaccurate with the actual situation at hand.
And that is since Season 1.
So, in Sublimation, we have Marinette who wants to approach Sublime and be friends with her but who Marinette can, and I quote, "never measure up to a girl like that". I'm sure a lot of people have at least one person, even online, with whom they want to be friend with, but never actually talk to due to fear of either leaving a bad first impression if not being downright rejected. So, we can sympathize with her there.
Still, Marinette also puts pressure on herself to do so because Sublime and Adrien are friends. And by extension, she should be friend with Sublime too.
It's not a bad thing and it is definitively an improvement over how she first reacted to Kagami. Still, I do wonder if Marinette realizes that not everybody has to be friends with her. That they can still be acquainted and respect each other while still not feeling obligated to establish a friendship... It makes me feel like Marinette is wanting to be friend with Sublime to ease her own anxiety rather than anything else. (Don't quote me on that, that is just the impression I am having.)
Anyway, Marinette being Marinette, overcomplicates the process. And her attempts to befriend Sublime by helping her are all aborted because Sublime is a very resourceful person herself who can handle her own. Not only that, but Sublime notices that Marinette has been following her and didn't know what to make of it. Good thing Adrien was able to reassure Sublime. At least a bit. The "How unique" comment from Sublime did feel like she was still uncomfortable and taken aback by Marinette's approach. At least, Sublime suggests that they all meet together to ease both Marinette and herself. Too bad Marinette didn't hear that and thought of the worst case scenario.
Still, the fact that Marinette needed to help Sublime to befriend her begs the question : does Marinette knows who she is when she is not helping people? Wanting to help Alya is what motivated her to endorse the Ladybug mantle. Helping people is how she made friends with everyone in her class. Helping her classmates is how she got a team. Helping Adrien is how she was able to talk to him like during Gamer or Gorizilla.
"We know we can always count on you, Marinette, so you can count on us too." - Mylène (Gigantitan)
"You are always helping people." - Adrien (Mayura)
And we got other instances where Marinette wanting to help actually made things derails. I can notably think of Reverser or how, in Origins, she was the one to encourages Ivan to write a song to Mylène. But before, there were other factors that took part in the equation.
But in Sublimation, I think it was indeed the first time where the chain of events was entirely Marinette's fault. Even Sublime did ask Marinette to stay put and not follow her, that they'll talk once her trial was over.
The soap on Sublime's running blade didn't mess thing up on their own. Sublime could apparently run fine despite it. It's when Sublime had to suddenly stop because Ladybug has appeared in front of her on the track as Sublime was racing at full-speed that caused the most damages. The sudden obstacle on the track combined with the soap is what made Sublime slipped, tripped and break both of her running blades in the process.
Marinette didn't listen. Marinette didn't wait. It is as if Marinette cannot stay idle by, alone with her own thoughts. As if Marinette has to take actions in order to keep herself distracted and avoid the actual problem with herself.
In this episode, she was her own biggest enemy. And it was not only impacting her, but others as well. At least, she managed to self-reflect in this episode and properly apologize twice -- as a civilian but also as a superhero as well.
Last thing, about Sublimation's power being ineffective against Ladybug and Chat Noir, I believe it has more to do with the fact there wasn't anything Sublimation could actually improved rather that LB and CN being already being their best self.
First, they have a whole conversation about how, as superheroes, they are volunteering, helping everyone for free, and that it also isn't their place to decide how others should behave. (Altruism)
Ladybug also manifested a desire to fix Sublime's blades even if she didn't know how at first. (Will of fixing her mistake)
And finally, Ladybug took a leap of faith and willingly accept to be Sublimed instead of running away. That takes bravery. Remember that Ladybug said earlier that she didn't trust anyone under the influence of the Butterfly Miraculous Holder. But after hearing Chat's point of view, she finds the courage and face her fear in this situation.
So we have a lot of noble values at display there. LB and CN are flawed and very humans but they are also doing their best. And when Ladybug makes a mistake, she owns it and will fix it. And so will Chat. Which is why Sublimation was pointless on them.
At least, that is my interpretation.
