Bonus Backstory: Finn and Jarret meet each other in a same sex bar. They immediately hit it off despite their differences. They learn how to support each other, figuring out what both of them need.
They get married quickly, wanting to settle that they are the ones for each other to their families. Each family ends up shunning them, not wanting to support relations between the species. They heal from it together, understand how the pain feels to be in each other's shoes.
As they age, they want to start a family together. They try to adopt, but they can't get approved because of a species conflict. Who would want a young werewolf to be raised by a vampire? Who would want a vampire child to age out their werewolf dad?
So they wait, in hopes that at some point, they will be able to have a child together. They continue their tradition of having date nights every Friday. That is, before they see you get in a car wreck.
You have just left your job, late at night. The streets are dark, so you run to your car in hopes no one will try to bother you. You put the keys in the ignition, start the car, and drive down the street. The stoplight ahead turns green, allowing you to continue down the street.
Going through the intersection, a car rams into the side of your car. Your airbags pop from the impact, leaving you disoriented. You analyze your body, feeling around for broken bones. You don't feel any, but your entire body feels extremely sore.
You hear a car's engine rev up, tires screeching against the road, going away from you. You try opening the door, but the metal is bent together, making it impossible to push it open. Voices come from outside the car, coming from behind it.
“Hey, are you okay?” Looking through the broken glass, you get glimpses of a short man with black hair.
“Yeah, I think so. I can't get the door open.” Your voice croaks.
A taller man appears through the broken glass, pushing the other man away and saying something to him. The tall man pulls on the door, bending the metal outwards. He manages to get it cracked open.
“Don't worry, I’ll get you out.” He grabs the end of the door, pulling it open, ripping the door off the hinges. He throws it to the side and gently helps you out.
“Are you okay?” He scans you, looking for any serious injuries.
“Um, I think, I’m just mainly sore.” You say, having a hard time coming up with words. You feel even more disoriented. The tall man helps you to the curb, sitting down with you.
“My name is Finn, by the way, my partner from before, Jarrett, went to get help. We saw the wreck, so don’t worry, we’ll be your witnesses.” You give him a thumbs up, not wanting to move your neck. It feels like it’s burning, making it hard to think.
Finn talks to you more, but you can’t remember what he says. You give him more thumbs up, hoping the help will get here soon. Your vision blurs and unblurs. The lights along the street hurt your eyes.
Finn now walks in front of you, talking to someone on his phone. He looks at you, concerned, and then looks around the streets. He hangs up the phone and sits down with you again.
“It’s okay, help will get here soon. Just try to relax for now. I know that’s easier said than done, but still try.” Finns says, watching you closely.
The short man from before appears in front of you again.
“Hi, I’m Jarrett. I’m here to help you out.” You look into his eyes, and you don’t remember them being so dark.
He sits on the other side of you, putting one of his arms around you. Finn holds you with both of his arms. Your brain is fuzzy with confusion, not really understanding what is happening. Out of the corner of your vision, you see Finn hunched away from you. You blink, still not understanding.
Suddenly, your mouth is hooked around Finn’s wrist, blood pouring into your mouth. You drink it with no other choice. But then his arm is away, your head throbs in pain, and sharp pains radiate from your neck. The pain in your body intensifies, and your vision goes black.
The pounding in your head is still strong. It doesn’t burn anymore, but rather it feels like a massive migraine. You hear noise, causing you to open your eyes. The room before you isn’t one you recognize. The dark green and brown is easy on your eyes, making the migraine lessen.
“You’re up now. How are you feeling?”
You sit up, looking around the room. Finn sits in the corner, an open book in his hands.
“I feel better, still have a major headache….I remember you, you’re Finn. I saw you after the wreck.” You analyze the room, noticing the fireplace beside Finn, and the thick dark green curtains on either side of the bed.
“We are at my house. We figured that you shouldn’t spend time alone, after an accident like that.” He closes the book, putting it on the table beside him.
The door across from you opens, and Jarrett appears behind it.
“So you are feeling better, I’m glad to hear it.” He shuts the door behind him, sitting on the edge of the bed you are in.
“I-I don’t understand, why am I here now?” You think back to the accident, you can remember the accident itself, the confusion, and meeting both of them, but nothing else.
“What do you remember happening? That will help us tell you what happened better.” Finn says, looking at his partner, talking to him through eye contact.
“Um, well, I was coming home from work. I went through an intersection, and a car hit me. I can't remember if I caused it, did I?” You look back and forth between their faces, for clues to your answer.
“You didn't cause the wreck. The other driver drove off from the scene. Can you tell us anything else you remember?” Jarrett asks, with a nervous undertone.
“I don't remember getting out of the car. I remember meeting Finn…then I met you too. After that…nothing.” You pause for a moment, thinking.
“Did I go to the hospital? This headache is terrible. Why are we here and not in the hospital?” You wish your memory didn't betray you.
“The paramedics cleared you out, you don’t remember that? They figured we were with you, so they told us just to keep an eye on you for a few hours. They left for another accident before we could explain the situation to them.” Finn explains to you.
You feel like things don’t add up. Why would these strangers willingly welcome you into their home, with no questions asked? Why did they just assume that you would be okay and comfortable with this?
“Well, thank you very much for watching over me. But I think it’s my time to go, I’m okay now.” You push yourself off the bed, looking for any of your belongings you had on you.
“Oh, that’s nonsense, you can still stay here. You said that you still have a major headache. You obviously don’t feel well still. Please, stay and relax.” Jarrett stands up. You feel like he’s guarding the door, but his body language is still relaxed.
“Yes, stay here for now. It was quite a blow that you took from the accident. I figure you are hungry now? Maybe some soup will help you feel better.” Finn gets up from his chair.
“I’ll go get some for you. You guys can stay here.” He opens the door, closing it behind him.
You still stand beside the bed, awkward and unsure what to think of the situation. Jarrett seems to relax more, sitting down in the chair Finn was just in. However, you remain in a state of unsteadiness.
“I know this all can be overwhelming for you. You woke up in a strange place, with two people you don’t know. But I promise you, we have no ill intentions. Our home is a safe place.” He tells you, wanting to bring comfort to you.
As you register the words, your eyes widen slightly, and a sense of calmness washes over you. You sit down on the bed, now comfortable in the strange room. It feels like magic, the second you hear them, all your past worries are behind you.
“How are you feeling now?” Jarrett asks you, pulling you from the magical feeling behind the words.
“I feel…good? My headache still hurts, but I'm okay.” You ponder the previous moments. Why were you so upset? Everything is fine. There was no need to be so uptight.
“Nice to hear that, I’m glad to hear that you feel more comfortable here.” Jarrett sits down beside the fireplace, relaxed.
The door opens with no warning, Finn appearing through it with a bowl in his hands.
“This should be good on your stomach, after the night you’ve had.” He says, setting the bowl into your outstretched hands.
“Finn and I need to talk for a moment, so we’ll just be in the other room. You can come meet us when you are done.” Jarrett announces leaving the chair. They exit the room, closing the door behind them. You hear Finn and Jarrett’s voices leave the door, muffled by the wall between you.
You eat the soup, its warm broth makes your throat feel better. Your headache eases in pain the more you eat. Finishing the soup, you get a better look at the room.
Almost everything is decorated with shades of brown and green. The fireplace is fake, but the fire that bounces around heats the room. You wonder if the rest of the house looks as modern and homey.
Taking the bowl with you, you open the door, curious about the rest of the house. The hallway you enter is green, with wooden trim following it to an opening. Voices get louder as you approach the opening, only to quiet down when you enter the open space.
“There you are, did you like the soup?” Finn asks you, taking the bowl from your hands. He walks over to the kitchen that overlooks the living room.
“Yeah, I feel much better now. You guys were right, the soup was good for me.” You remain near the hallway space, unsure where to be in the moment.
“Come sit with us, we can all relax together.” Jarrett suggests, patting the couch that he sits in the middle of. Noises start coming from the TV, and a cartoon comes into your vision when you join his side. Finn joins both of you, sitting on the other side of Jarrett.
The cartoon plays on, no one takes their interest from it to talk. As the room gets darker, the light of the TV shines in your eyes, becoming the main source of light. It makes your eyes squint, straining them.
“Maybe it's time for us to get back into bed.” Finn says, looking at the time on his watch. Jarrett looks to the windows on the side of the room, seeing the almost dark sky.
“I think so too. It’s been a big day today, probably best to get some extra sleep.” Jarrett reaches for the remote on the coffee table, turning it off.
You think that they are referring to themselves, almost feeling like they don't see you anymore. That is, until they both look at you, expecting a response.
“You mean me?” You mirror them, expecting an explanation.
“Yes, who else would we be talking to, silly.” Finn tells you.
You look at Jarrett, wondering if he's thinking the same as his partner, the look in his eyes doesn't even let you question it.
“Um, it is getting dark. But I have slept all day and night. There's no way I can fall asleep now.” You cross your arms against your chest, uncomfortable again.
Moments ago, you felt comfortable here; now, you remember the details from before. You wanted to leave shortly after you woke up, but something convinced you not to.
“You can sleep some more. Sleep is good for you to heal.” Jarrett tells you, standing with his partner, holding his hand out at you.
Hearing him speak again, you remember his words convinced you to stay. Who says he can’t do it again? You look at his hand, taking it. It’s better to fake it until you have a chance to leave.
They take you back towards the room you were in before, Finn opening the door for everyone. You and Jarrett walk in after him, Jarrett dropping your hand once you are beside the bed. Finn leaves the door, rummages through a dresser, pulling out dark oversized clothes.
“These should be good for you during the night. Later, we can get you some more.” He holds them up, showing them off to you before leaving them on the bed.
“It won't be too long till we get everything set up for you. Soon, we'll have your room set up for you.” Jarrett adds on, smiling at you before he stands near the doorway.
You could have sworn you saw two teeth poking out more than the others. Before you can think about it more, Finn hugs you, distracting you from your thoughts.
“Like Jarrett said before, you are safe here. No need to worry anymore, you have us with you now. Have sweet dreams, good night.” He tells you after the hug, exiting to the hallway. Jarrett leaves after him, telling you good night, shutting the door.
Footsteps go back down the hallway, towards the living room.
Jarrett must have told Finn about the time you had just spent with him. What else would he have known that he said that? But why talk about that out of anything else?
You don't feel the influence of the words anymore, wanting to leave more than ever. You leave the clothes on the bed, listening to any noises from the rest of the house.
After what feels like an hour of listening, you haven't heard anything. This is the moment you can take off. You figure out the house's layout, finding the back door by the kitchen. Stepping outside, the cold air sends chills throughout your body. You try your best to ignore it, watching your breath in the air as you make your way forward.
The house is almost immediately swarmed by trees, barely having a backyard. The frosty ground makes your feet numb as you continue your walk, looking for any signs of civilization.
After some time, you start to shake more as the cold gets to you more. You hold your arms against yourself, barely keeping yourself warm. Ahead of you, a space in between trees appears, a distinct line with trees on the other side. Powering through the cold, you meet it, finding a road. You walk alongside it, hoping the right person will help you out.
The wind isn't slowed down because of the trees, making your eyes water as it hits your face. You continue walking against the wind, whistling in your ears. It muffles the noises around you, causing you not to hear paws hitting the ground behind you.
A large dark figure, almost as tall as you, steps right in front of you. It didn't give you much space to stop. Its dark fur is warming you as you come into contact with it. It nuzzles into you as you back away from it, scared of what it could be.
You manage to get room in-between you and the creature, wondering why it's so friendly with you. It's a giant brown wolf with amber eyes. Their eyes remind you of Finn, having almost the same eye color.
The wolf approaches you again, butting their head, pushing you back towards the trees. You stay still in response, worried that they will become angry with you. It continues pushing you, pushing you a little harder each time.
You follow their cues now, thinking they are getting frustrated with you. They walk beside you as you walk in the woods again, correcting your movement when you don't head in the right direction.
“You can't be leading me back, where are you taking me?” You ask it, feeling silly, talking to a wolf. You wrap your arms around yourself, really feeling the effects of the cold.
The wolf watches you shiver more. They walk closer to you now, letting their fur cover your exposed skin. They continue pushing you in the direction of the house. You try to walk in other directions, but each time, they encourage you back in the direction of the house.
Soon enough, lights poke through the trees, and you get closer to the house. The back door opens the second you leave the tree line. Jarrett frantically runs to the two of you.
“Oh, dear, how did you get so far away? Good thing Finn got you, you're back home now. Let's get you by the fireplace.” Jarret hugs you, not a single feeling of heat coming from him.
“Finn?” You ask, Jarrett pulling you inside, the wolf following behind.
“You weren't meant to know for a while, but he is a werewolf.” Jarrett continues pulling you through the house, leading back to the room. The wolf, Finn, trails both of you through the house.
You think back to the time you spent with him in the woods. You feel it makes sense now that he didn't try to attack you and led you back to the house.
“Guess that makes sense.” You reply, Jarret stopping you in front of the fireplace, putting blankets around your shoulders. Finn sits next to you, encouraging you to steal his body heat. Your fingers tingle, the blood coming back to them after being in the cold.
You look at Jarrett, and he sits down where Finn was when you woke up.
“You can't do that ever again. We need you here with us. We are your dads, there's no reason to leave.” He tells you.
Your eyes widen, and the words feel like they have been set in stone in your brain. You don't even know why you left anymore. You know that you can never do that again. Staying with Finn and Jarrett is the best thing for you to do. No need for anyone else.
