The pure white, scented flowers of Philadelphus satsumi (mock orange blossom) make a great addition to a shrub border. Older shoots have dark greyish brown bark and the leaves are opposite each other on the stem. The plant originated in Japan and was introduced to cultivation in Europe in 1851.

Postcards from Seattle✨We returned home from our last trip just in time to see the mock orange blooming everywhere! This particular one is the one we visit every year and in one of our favorite parks. This year, however, we had a BIG surprise when we drove down our alley and found two of them had sprung up amongst the berry brambles on one side and along the fence line on the other. Apparently they followed us home? Whatever the case, the blossoms are brilliant bursts or white and the scent is sweet and sharp without being cloying… in fact, we think they smell like sweet-tart candies.
