Planet of Blue (The German entry of 1996 that didn't compete because of that stupid prequalification round)?
Heard it a lot in the server since most of my German friends will swear it was the only good song Germany sent in the 90s, it's not my cup of tea but it's certainly memorable. I was honestly surprised it came out in the 90s, it's so weird and futuristic sounding.
Also this is my first time seeing the singer and man the 1996 unaired semi final really deprived us of this snacc eh?
Honestly, despite some weird story beats and pacing issues, it's one of the better live-action remakes.
My first issue is that they yada-yada Cruella's childhood and it hurts the story emotionally. You barely see Cruella and her mother interact, so when her mother is unceremoniously knocked off the cliff by the dalmatians, you don't feel much because you don't know this woman. She was nice, but that was about it. Not to mention the way she is just flung off the cliff is borderline comedic.
Also, why not up the drama of the scene?! Like, it plays like whacky hijinks, but then you see someone get killed. Why not add some drama, like the dogs are ripping at her clothes and she falls trying to get away. Or maybe she sees Cruella before falling off the balcony. Anything other than what we got.
The other reason the death-by-dalmatians doesn't work is because Cruella talks to her mother throughout her life and has a pretty emotional monologue to her before the climax. It would have meant a lot more had the beginning slowed down and have us truly see Cruella and her mother's relationship: as it is, you see Emma Stone acting her heart out in this scene, but it has nearly no emotional weight due to the fact that we don't have any feeling for the person she's talking to.
Emma Thompson's character the Baroness is enjoyable to watch and I could see her being an animated character. My only issue is that she can be a bit too one note- she's supposed to be this practically emotionless. cutthroat fashion mogul, but there could have been some variation to her character
They try to play with the idea that Cruella is like a split personality which is... weird...
I find the movie got much more entertaining when Estella/Cruella got older. Seeing how she, Horace, and Jasper live is an interesting angle. the crime element is what makes it interesting
Horace and Jasper are fine. I like the actors playing them
Wink the dog is great
While the “Disney’s first openly gay character” is tired, I like Artie. At the very least they show that the character is gender non-conforming and at least play lip-service to the fact that he faces homophobia
Like I said, there are pacing issues. this movie really didn't need to be two hours.
I feel like even before she debuts as Cruella, she could have already started her own label. Since they went with a punk angle, it could have started as an underground fashion brand that got the attention of the younger crowd and been pretty popular. And once she debuts as Cruella, the clothes become the talk of the town
Including Roger feels like an afterthought. Anita doesn’t get enough time as it is, but at least she has a point in the story. Also race-bending Anita and Roger felt like such a attempt at “diversity points” without actually putting in the work. Anita could have been used to much greater effect in the movie.
This was a waste of Mark Strong
The fact that the Baroness is Estella/Cruella’s biological mom is super contrived. It doesn’t even really matter in the grand scheme of the story. All it does is give us the origin of Hell Hall
I love the fashion in this movie. Not just the Baroness and Cruella’s, but the whole movie. It looks like they did their homework on 70s fashion (though they mix too many styles just a bit)
I like that Emma Stone captured Cruella’s posh accent
I actually liked the skirt-parachute lol
I always give the live-action movies points for doing something different, and it did do something different. Had this been streamlined a little more, it would have been much better. As is, it’s fine and something I may put on in the background while I do something else.
