One thing I noticed about girl culture in the late 90s-early 2000s is that the aesthetics associated with it are very 60s-70s influenced.
Like the lava lamps, low rise jeans, and their bedrooms being all covered in groovy flowers. Pop stars back then also wore sequin outfits like Disco musicians did in the 70s as well as platform boots and sandals.
There's even characters like groovy chick, groovy girls, and the Diva Starz (they all seem to be influenced by the vibes of the 70s). Barbie art in the late 90s gives off those 60s art vibes. Is this like, a trend back then?
I love this ask cause it’s something that’s not talked about enough. Absolutely. 1990’s and 2000’s girl fashion did really cling onto some hippie and mod styles of the 1960s and 1970s. I loved the style so much. You couldn’t open a fashion magazine without seeing some outfit collages saying flower power and it was not just fashion. It was right down to the room decore! The blow up furniture trend even started back then, we had bean bags, lava lamps, flower stickers on our walls. Beaded curtains. I remember Spencer’s gifts back in the day being a mix of both like hippie and modern trends. Like the back with the lava lamps smelt like incesne and we bought our first beaded curtain in there and it was glow in the dark peace signs. Aliens were super popular. We had an alien poster and they were dressed very 1970s. And I’ve always loved that style too. It’s something I’ve always loved since I was a kid and still to this day being raised by hippies myself. Even my parents pointed out the parallels all the time in our trendy styles. Like my dream shoes back then in the late 1990s, were white go go boots. And I loved Shirley masons dress from “I’m Only Happy When It Rains” music video. We had ponchos make a come back too in the 2000s. 1960’s was also super futuristic and fashion too with decor and obviously that came back too. So many examples.
Futuristic styles. First one is 2000s second photo is 1960s.
Mod style dresses in late 1990s that’s from 1960s
These shapes of dresses, totally mod 1960s. I was obsessed. I have one like this with a big white flower on the chest from the 2000’s. lol I wish I could find some magazine clippings. I’ll have to do some digging.
Flower power and mod prints.
Just look at Paris Hilton here and real 1960’s styles.
It even stayed around for the late 2000s too. Anyone remember teasing your hair back and putting in bump its?
I feel like this topic could go on forever. Thanks for this ask. 🩷🩷 I loved all these styles growing up and I saw it in my parents music watching old 1960s bands. The styles were awesome. Futuristic and so ahead for the time. One of my favorite pairs of clothes growing up was the biggest bell bottom jeans I owned with flowers embroidered up the legs. My parents always said. This is so 1970s. lol it was 2000. lol

Twiggy, 1960’s🩷🤍💛🖤
Journey back to the "Space Age" as interpreted by 1970s couture, where the architecture implies "intergalactic space station" and the fashion implies "groovy geometry." On the left, we have a skirt that looks suspiciously like a connect-the-dots puzzle waiting to happen, paired with a sheer blouse that relies entirely on confidence and hairspray to function. On the right, the attendant sports a white tunic ensemble that says, "I have a fashion show at 5:00 and a shift in the medical bay of the USS Enterprise at 6:00." Bonus points for the photographer lurking in the mirror reflection, the analog ancestor of the accidental mirror selfie.
