Last night I thought my laptop was telling me it was time to start shopping for a replacement. It turns out that I have a different issue going on. Comcast had an outage in my area yesterday morning, and once service was restored, both my laptop and my iPad were saying they were connected to the wi-fi, but I couldn’t get on the internet with either of them. I called tech support, and they said everything was showing up as being fine on their end, so it must have been an issue with the devices. I figured it was odd to have 2 devices malfunction at the same time, but stranger things have happened.
This morning, more devices were doing the same thing. Smart TV, Amazon Echo, Roku...everything except my iPhone and internet radio were doing the same thing. They were connected but couldn’t actually access the internet.
I ended up exchanging DMs with the Comcast Cares account on Twitter, and they’re going to be sending out a tech, hopefully on Saturday. Their suspicion is that it’s either something on the premises or an issue with the modem itself. This explanation makes a lot more sense to me than a bunch of devices acting up at once. Especially since all these devices can access the internet via XFinity hotspots or when I turn on the personal hotspot on my iPad or iPhone.
For now I’ve got workarounds, including having my laptop connected to the modem via an ethernet cable. And hopefully once a tech comes out, exactly what’s going on will be fixed and I can go back to having all my devices accessing the internet without any further problem.
And I’ll still be shopping for a new laptop anyways, because this one does have its issues, including the case splitting open in one spot. But at least I don’t have to do anything about it right away.
