In A Lonely Lockdown, With Books Slow To Come, Fanfiction Booms

Superfans turned amateur scribes fuel a collective outburst of creative catharsis.

First drafts were just submitted, and after taking a peek at them, we're super excited for the finished products!

We've got something for everyone, from Canon era to dance AUs, extreme hurt/comfort to domestic fluff, even something from the perspective of an unexpected animal, and every ship you could think of!

If an artist (without a partner) is posting art to Ao3, what tags do we use, and how do we add a work into a collection? Also, do we need to provide any description with our art in the Ao3 post? Thank you!

Type “Art” into the “Additional Tags” field, and select all applicable tags for your piece(s). This might include “Art,” “Digital Art,” “NSFW Art,” etc. You should also use any other relevant tags (ships, characters, AUs...)

Go to the “Final Deadline Reminder & Posting Instructions” email we just sent out. The first line in the instructions for posting contains a link to the AO3 collection. Follow the link, make sure you’re logged in to your account, and join the collection. Then click “Post New” as normal, and in the “Collections” field, type in Les Mis Big Bang: Quarantine Edition and select it. This will make your work part of the collection when you post.

I would advise including a description of the art in the summary section so that people will know if they want to look at it, and also so that visually impaired people know what it is! There will also be an option for an image description when you embed the image(s).

It’s now 2:30am in Seattle, so we’ll be assigning Betas and sending out the official introduction emails when we wake up. We spent hours poring over submissions and checking out some existing work, and we’re so incredibly excited about the collaborations that are going to come out of this!

Hello! If we wish to do 2 medium images, (as art), what are the size criteria? And also, is there a limit on how experienced the art should be? I’m not very knowledgeable about digital art. I hate you have a good day!

After consulting with our resident Art Expert, Modvroche, we have concluded that, using standard paper sizes in any orientation:

Large = A4

Small = 2, each A6

Sketches = 3, in one A5

If you're like me and have never seen this standardized system before, A4 is an average piece of printer paper; A6 is ¼ of a page, and A5 is ½. You should be able to set these sizes in any digital program, or if you're making physical art and scanning it, just go off of paper size.

Please note these are minimum requirements, though, and everyone is welcome to do more than this in any category (5 sketches, a really massive drawing, etc.)

Why I’m excited for the Les Mis Big Bang: I’ve been wanting to organize one of these for a couple of years - it’s always so exciting to see a burst of new fic and art in the fandom, and collaborating with other creators is one of my favorite things to do.

I’m looking forward to working with you, and seeing what everyone writes/draws/makes!

Hi, the document doesn't say who signed up for how to start? Like I signed up to have someone else create something off my idea, but now I'm feeling very awkward bringing it up like "by the way, what did you want to do?" I know you guys are doing your absolute best and this turned into a huge event, I'm just sitting here with my stomach in my throat having an anxiety attack because how do social.

We’re sorry this is causing you so much distress!

Probably 90% of people were paired following how they wanted to work, so if you said you wanted to use your idea, the other person probably signed up to work off their partner’s idea! But if you’re still nervous about it, email us and we’ll double check your partner’s submission and see what they said.

Unfortunately due to the nature of the event, one of you will have to reach out to the other and make contact soon in order to start. But if you two get stuck or have difficulty collaborating, you can contact a mod via email or in the Discord server and we can troubleshoot (kind of like professors during a group project!).

If it makes you feel better, everyone I’ve talked to is super friendly and open, but a little nervous (even me!) so you’re in good company.

Hey sorry if this a stupid question - as far as I've experienced so far, most 'fandom big bangs' seem to be based around smut. I'd like to take part in a writing thing like this, but have an aversion to sex scenes and would never manage to write that? So I was just wondering, is this still something I could take part in, or is it only for smut writers? Sorry if this is stupid to ask, just don't want to sign up if I can't do it.

No stupid questions here, friend! I’m glad you asked!

This event is not based around smut/explicit content in any way. A huge portion of the participants (and the fandom in general) are minors, and we want the event to be open to all creators!

A few people have specified that they want to make smut/would prefer partners who are not minors, and we have gone out of our way to facilitate that. But our assumption has been that the default for the event is non-explicit content, as previous Les Mis Big Bang events have not centred on explicit content.
