We’ve now assigned all the betas and are working on creating a google document for each pair to collaborate in!
We apologize for the delay in getting the welcome email sent out, we had a plumbing issue come up so we’re dealing with that as well :/
A note about community/mod support for the Big Bang
We got a great question via email today and I wanted to share the answer with everyone here:
If you sign up through our official form, you will be given access to the Big Bang Discord server when we send out assignments. We have dedicated mods in the server who will be able to answer questions, help you brainstorm, and generally cheer you on as you work.
You'll also be able to interact with all the other participants there, and we hope that this may lead to more collaborations and connections beyond the event!
Hi, the document doesn't say who signed up for how to start? Like I signed up to have someone else create something off my idea, but now I'm feeling very awkward bringing it up like "by the way, what did you want to do?" I know you guys are doing your absolute best and this turned into a huge event, I'm just sitting here with my stomach in my throat having an anxiety attack because how do social.

We’re sorry this is causing you so much distress!
Probably 90% of people were paired following how they wanted to work, so if you said you wanted to use your idea, the other person probably signed up to work off their partner’s idea! But if you’re still nervous about it, email us and we’ll double check your partner’s submission and see what they said.
Unfortunately due to the nature of the event, one of you will have to reach out to the other and make contact soon in order to start. But if you two get stuck or have difficulty collaborating, you can contact a mod via email or in the Discord server and we can troubleshoot (kind of like professors during a group project!).
If it makes you feel better, everyone I’ve talked to is super friendly and open, but a little nervous (even me!) so you’re in good company.
Hey sorry if this a stupid question - as far as I've experienced so far, most 'fandom big bangs' seem to be based around smut. I'd like to take part in a writing thing like this, but have an aversion to sex scenes and would never manage to write that? So I was just wondering, is this still something I could take part in, or is it only for smut writers? Sorry if this is stupid to ask, just don't want to sign up if I can't do it.

This event is not based around smut/explicit content in any way. A huge portion of the participants (and the fandom in general) are minors, and we want the event to be open to all creators!
A few people have specified that they want to make smut/would prefer partners who are not minors, and we have gone out of our way to facilitate that. But our assumption has been that the default for the event is non-explicit content, as previous Les Mis Big Bang events have not centred on explicit content.
I'm excited for this because I love Big Bangs! I do have a question tho, normally writers create prompts and artist picks the one they choose to match to, this time Mods will pair people more like an exchange, is that correct?
That's fairly close to the way we're running it, yes!
In order to create more opportunity for nontraditional creators (like cosplayers, filmmakers, anyone beyond writers and visual artists) to participate, and to make it generally more accessible, we decided not to weight the creative process toward one creator or another.
Some people have requested to work off their partner's idea, and others have asked to come up with the idea their partner will help them with, (and so far it looks like we'll be able to honor all those requests).
But the majority of people will be coming up with a concept together and then collaborating on it. So in that way, it's not really like an exchange - we're trying to pair people up to work together, which is a rare opportunity for many creators.
I've read friends drafts and given my thoughts before but I've never been a beta reader, what is required?
Beta-ing is a little bit like acting as a peer reviewer in class. The creator will tell you what they're looking for (grammar/spelling, if a certain thing makes sense, things they could cut/expand upon, input on XYZ, etc) and you read/watch/listen/look over their draft, then offer feedback about that specific thing.
They may ask you for just one round of feedback, or to look at their work over the course of the event until they publish it. A big part of the creator/Beta relationship will be worked out between each set, as everyone needs something different!
how do we submit our outlines/drafts? do we just send a link to the google doc?
On the 28th, we will send out an email that includes collaborator assignments, prompts, and links to your official Big Bang draft document in our drive. You can either type your work directly into it, or copy in drafts of what you’re working on before each deadline.
If I have some ideas for what i want to write but am open to taking input from my collaborator should I put 'Outline my piece, then have my partner work off of my idea' or 'Come up with an idea together/use the provided prompt' ?
If you're committed to using your idea(s) as the base for your project, and just want to build on them using input from your partner, say you want to start with your own idea.
If you have some vague concepts floating around but are pretty flexible/open to moving in different directions depending on what your partner brings to the table, say you want to come up with something together!
