If i had a nickel for every time I adopted an animal of a species known for eating just about anything they can get in their mouths but were in fact the the pickiest eaters you had ever seen, I'd have ten cents which is comically weird

Mohsen Namjoo - Tolou-e Man
Senin tatlı yaran gelir bende kanar
Turgut Uyar, Büyük Saat s.284 ‘Güneşi Bol Ülke’
Mohsen is a guy to worship
All my cats were adopted as kittens so I know what they were like their entire lives. But my first dog was adopted at a little over a year old and since my second dog was a total (if absolutely gorgeous) mutt with no record other than a tag-less collar, it was impossible to tell how old he was (the vet I took him to in Indiana guessed he was three, but his health declined within two years to that of an elder dog, and when he died six years later in Maryland our vet then said he was likely older based on the type of cancer he got). I'm 100% for adopting older animals don't get me wrong, but I'll always wonder what they were like as puppies and what happened to them.
What did the incredibly intelligent and emotionally intuitive and extremely kid-friendly half Lab-half Goldie Jake (who, upon seeing tiny 6-year-old me for the first time, ran at me full speed only to stop with a foot to spare the immediate second i panicked and screamed "STOP! SIT!") do for the family that named him to surrender him to the shelter? What was the not so bright, extremely well behaved until my roommate spoiled him, and fiercely devoted (he had a weak jaw and loved everyone and everything, but went absolutely aggro and tried to bust thru our fence the moment he saw i was cornered by three feral dogs) Mohsen's sins that his previous family (that apparently only fed him human food and spent money on a collar) never came looking for him?
Like if you lived in Indiana in 1999 and surrendered a half yellow lab and half golden retriever named Jake or if you lived in Indiana in 2014 and let a medium sized fluffball who was so polite that the one time I got him to play tug-o-war I messed up by playfully telling him to drop it that he immediately dropped it and never played it again wander away and never tried to find him even after I walked around town with him asking around and then took him to the pound to stay for a week to wait for you, both fuck you and also thanks for letting those good boys be part of my life
Fireworks in the distance and it reminds me of one fourth of July where my dog Mohsen, who passed away 4 years ago, was naturally freaked out by all the booming and was hiding under the sturdy wooden desk while I happened to be on the computer, but then I had to go cook dinner so I gave him some reassuring pets before I got up to go the kitchen, and then while waiting for water to boil I sat down in a flimsy ikea dining chair and then I became aware of the fact that Mohsen had shakily left the sanctuary the solid wood computer desk and come out to the kitchen area, where he then proceeded to stuff his front half under the flimsy ikea chair where I was sitting and I realized he didn't want the safety of the computer desk, he wanted the safety of me 🥹
I made these bottle cap and Mod Podge Dimensional Magic memorial pins for my animals last night. I made one for my childhood dog Jake too but I dropped it and cannot find it so I'm remaking it. I'm remaking the one with Mohsen too because the first one had bubbles in. My printer sucks despite being a photo printer so the images aren't the best quality, but whatever.
[Image Description: three bottle caps with photos of animals in them, filled with a clear resin-like coating. In the first one, a small orange cat with yellow eyes is sticking his head out of a plastic toy barn. In the second, a fluffy multicolored dog with his tongue blepping out is laying on a couch on top of a colorful quilt. There is a group of small bubbles on this photo. In the third, a small tabby cat with green eyes is cuddling a hand. End I.D.]
I went off on an fb ad that was advocating for taking your dog off the leash but my app closed before I could screencap it. Basically everyone who got angry with it was told "lol train your dog better" and it pissed me off so I'll repeat it here.
My dog was extremely well behaved. I can't take credit for that, whoever had him first had him so obedient that the one time he ever played tug of war ended when I playfully told him "gimme that". That said, I never took Mohsen off the leash unless we were at the dog park. You know what happened to him at the dog park? He was attacked by a dog who should have never been taken off the leash. I was talked out of pressing charges because Mohsen had only superficial wounds, but that's solely because he had such a shaggy coat–the other dog went straight for Mohsen's throat. I could just as easily pressed charges and had the other dog put down. Maybe I should have, idk.
Everyone thinks their dog is special and would never do such a thing, but all it takes is a single instance of your dog falling prey to a moment of instinct, mischief, or stupidity, and it's all over for your special dog. I don't blame the other dog, I blame his owner for being reckless with her dog's life, my dog's life, and the lives of all the other dogs and humans at the park that day.
On top of still not being over my dog Mohsen dying of brain cancer two years ago, Nerys's estimated time of death will be within like two weeks of that anniversary and I'm not sure how I'll deal with that
