It's odd to me that Cassette Beasts is typically compared to Pokemon where there's a lot more Digimon-like stuff going on in the setting:

people from different worlds ending up in a world that runs on human desires/thoughts/etc that's full of monsters

monsters are information-based beings

transforming into monsters

fusion between monsters

setting had different bits and bobs and manmade structures just randomly in the wilderness

monsters can have multiple recolors that can have different typings and abilities

the boss mons very much can talk

protag attempts to leave the strange monster-filled world and gets a boss/deity monster assigned quest

The more I interact with the game the more the facelessness and artificiality of the beasts grows on me.

The mons in Cassette Beasts aren't really critters yer bonding with but costumes being worn by the characters. Many of them lack a properly defined or typical face helps reflect that. They are effectively masks.

And the artificiality of the mons does help impart that they're not really natural living creatures but, not unlike the archangels, they're walking concepts. [And yeah a few of these concepts needed to have been run by the game equivalent of a sensitivity reader like the fucking ancient Egyptian alien monsters but otherwise... ]

Folk really out there crying that Pokemon has a monopoly on the mon genre but act like the double OG of the mon genre, Megami Tensei/Shin Megami Tensei (and its spinoff media like Persona), doesn't exist. They act like Digimon ain't still going strong in video games, cards, cartoons, comics, and more. The wanna cry like the media created by 'dead' franchises stops fucking existing as soon as a franchise stops making new shit for some fucking reason, And refuse to interact with new indy shit.

Like, Pokemon fans... that sounds like a fucking skill issue on yer part. Fucking broaden yer fucking horizons and try shit that's new to you instead of giving Gamefreak more money for remakes of the same fucking games at diminishing quality.

Played more Cassette Beasts. I'm at lvl 71. I got Eugene and Felix up to 5 hearts and figured out that for the humans in order to get that last heart apparently we need to rest at the cafe. Found 2 more bootlegs [CB equivalent to shinies, I have now 4 total just from exploring and 1 that was a gift] while just running around the map leveling up

Gonna take Eugene with me to go fight those old ladies again.

also found and recorded a Miss Mimic. Havent managed to record the stained glass fairy yet

Ethiclly I do not feel like I can romance any of the romancable companions. Primarily b/c I'm aware that they all want to go to their respective homeworlds at the end of the quest and it would feel weird to intentionally romance someone knowing that we'll have to break it off sooner rather than later. Also idk I don't like that polyamory isnt an option. They're all my companions that I care for and who care for me, we've all fused and I've seen them attempt to bond without me. Polyamory should have been an option.

On the other hand, ethics wise I have a lot more incentive to actually record and evolve monsters to fill out my beastiary in Cassette Beasts than I do in games like Pokemon or Digimon or Monster Hunter Stories. because I am the monster. Any recordings I make are just me reskinning my player. These recordings are not living and/or sapient beings that I'm shoving into a box or leaving on a farm when I'm not using them so I dont feel bad about collecting ones I'm not gonna use.

Actually? Why aren't there more mon things where the player/characters get to turn into monsters?

Back when I was in college I was the one who made a separate tvtropes page for the Magi-Nation cartoon and started the character page and added a bunch of images to the character page.

It's been a very long time since I had the time, motivation, or energy to add more to it tho I did see evidence that at least one other person did some contributions.

Pls if yer a Magi-Nation fan of any part of the franchise you can help work on the tvtropes pages. The character pg especially needs a lot of love and folks who know the characters from the cards/fiction/games especially yall probably know more than I do for those guys.

I mean, I assume that the vivisaurs are like that b/c

a) aliens fucking with life on Earth in the past

b) Necromancy and other literal magic

both being canon to Fossil Fighters and that's why them being super inaccurate just straight-up monsters bothers me less than the inaccurate dino mons in Dinosuar King.
