AU fics are my favorite, and this is the best one I've read in months. It's a beautifully crafted story about how investing in your own growth and trying new things and pushing your limits to new heights can bring you self-confidence and understanding and more happiness than you could have imagined. The writing is lyrical but not overwrought and it slow burns so wonderfully. There's bedsharing (or more like tentsharing) and banter and card games and pining. Also their trail register messages are definitely a highlight and they're used to great effect. Most importantly (for a good AU) the David and Patrick of this fic are exactly the characters we love. David can be whiny but he's stubborn too and uncertain and definitely kind of a disaster. Patrick is outwardly confident even in the face of so much that's new. They're very THEM, even though the setting is different. It makes this fic very much worth the read.
