Fairy Au Soulmates
26. Wildcard AU (anon’s choice: fairy)
L. Soulmates
It’s not common knowledge anymore, not after the war with the pixies, but a fairy’s wings are always two colors:* the main color, and markings in a second color. This second color would be the same color as the main color of their soulmate’s wings, and the soulmates would have matching markings. So, for example, if you had white wings with red markings, then your soulmate would have red wings with white markings; the two of you would have matching shapes for your markings.
Jim has always had these strange, dark purple markings across his back and shoulders. When he became the trollhunter, he had Toby take multiple photos of the engravings on his back. They did not match the purple markings, and so Jim dismissed them as a mystery about himself he would never solve. The show proceeds as normal, until everything goes wrong.
You see, Morgana was born towards the end of the war with the pixies. Unlike her half-brother Arthur, she was half-fairy, and when her fairy father was killed she was left behind from the exile with her human mother and her new human stepfather, Uther Pendragon. She grew up, and half-fairies aren’t too different from fully human wizards so she excelled under Merlin’s tutelage. But she never forgot her father. And so, hundreds of years after she was trapped in a Heartstone, she finds a girl with latent fairy blood wielding her Skathe-Hrün. And so, when Claire makes the giant portal, she does not appear in the clearing with the others.
It is assumed that she died. That the staff killed her. Everyone wonders how they will tell Claire’s parents why their daughter is missing and why they will never find her.
They don’t have to come up with an explanation, not when four weeks after Claire’s initial disappearance she shows up again, mind controlled and with wings. They save Claire, and she throws herself into their arms, sobbing because the experimentation she endured was horrible.
After they return Claire to her worried parents (and finally explain that yes, magic exists), Jim realizes something: Claire’s wings are the same shade of dark purple as the markings on his back. And she has sky blue markings on her wings whose shape matches the ones on his back.
*Almost always. Some fairies had single-colored wings and therefore no soulmate. Fairy society called these fairies fatemakers; they had to forge their own fate instead of being able to use the map of their soulmate. Modern English-speaking areas would suggest that the vast majority of fatemakers were on the aro and/or ace spectrums. Likewise, there were some fairies with wings that had two or more different colored sets of markings. Fairy society would call these fairies mosaic-winged, modern English-speaking areas would suggest that the vast majority of mosaic-winged fairies were polyamorous.
Angsty sapphic bonus: The Arcane Order gave Morgana her wings at the same time as her prosthetic hand. They’re dark gold with markings that are the same color as Guinevere’s eyes. Morgana had spied the same markings on Guinevere’s back, but in dark gold.
